Today we visited the charming montain village Erice. It was nice to walk trough the narrow streets of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, at it says. The symbol of Erice is the Castello di Venere, built by the Normans. When building it, they used materials from the Temple of Venere Ericina from which it takes its name. Unfortunatily it is now closed, so we could only see it at the outside.

We visited Erice as part of a day trip from Palermo. We drove the narrow snaky road that lead us to this medieval town where it seems like time stood still. The castle was the highlight of the visit. You can only walk around the outside but the area is beautiful and the views are stunning. If you have a few hours and want to see something special I would recommend a visit.

Unfortunately, the Mayor Toscano of Erice has keep this sacred Ancient site closed to the public for more than one year now with the excuse of security renovations. This an amazing archeological site of major historical significance an Ancient Temple to Venus the Goddess of Love. This needs to be available for the whole world to experience! I visited the town yesterday and interviewed many of the towns people who are very upset. This site was supposed to be opened by April 2024 and now the mayor is saying he may open only a small part of it. This site belongs to the whole World and must be open to the world!

The medieval village of Erice, with its Castle on the top of the mountain of the same name, was once a sanctuary dedicated to the female divinity of fertility, people came from all over the Mediterranean. Over time the name of the Goddess was changed: in the Phoenician era it was Astarte, with the Greeks it became Aphrodite and with the Romans it moved on to the cult of Venus, only with the arrival of the Normans did it move on to the sacred Catholic cult of the Virgin Mary. I visited it outside... the panoramic view is fascinating as is imagining the female cult inherent in the place in the mists of time.

The fortress was built in the 12th-century when the Normans were expanding their dominion. Well-preserved fortress, which also contains the ruins of a Roman temple, and medieval village. On a clear day, the fortress likely provides great panoramic views of the lower surrounding picturesque area. During our visit, it was a little foggy in some areas, which hindered part of the viewable area. We drove our rental car up the winding road.

Riding on my road race cycle I had the pleasure to climb the mount Erice, in the wsr side of Sicily, in the Trapani area, Erice is a beautiful town, a lot of attractions, but the castle is the top.

Located 750m above sea level, on top of Monte San Giuliano, this medieval castle offers a wonderful experience to history lovers and also offers an amazing panorama of the surrounding areas below, and as well as a charming garden around it! A bar/cafeteria is also available in the nearby garden.

If you are planning to travel in Sicilia do not forget to include Erice in the list. There is a funicular from Trapani to Erice so it is easy to get there even without a car. There is a good parking downstairs near the funicular station so it is a good point in the itinerary when travelling by car as well. If you are in Erice do not miss the Venus Castle - it will take 10 min on foot from the city entrance and it is really beautiful and worth to be seen. This is a very old castle full of history dating from the Norman period and built on top of the ancient Venus temple. The views are splendid.

Getting there is half the fun!! For the weak of heart take the wider switch-back road on the east side of mountain. You share that with the tour busses. But if you are really in the mood for the drive of your life, use the smaller road up the southeast side. It will surely be a test of your fortitude.
Speaking of sights at Erice, the village is charming but totally oriented towards tourism. If you drive, go early to assure parking near the entry gate to the village. Once inside the gate, you can meander through the cobblestone streets and shop and eat and drink til you drop. Then for a break, find your way to the fortress. The medival structure will be a nice break from all the Greco-Roman ruins that you have probably been visiting. The access is very easy with well maintained side walks and is pretty close to being handicap friendly. Read up on the history before you go and you will enjoy your exploration more.
The views from this marble mountain top are phenonimal. No matter which side you view from, you can see for more than 100 km on a clear day.

We did not go inside the castle but toured the ramparts and enjoyed the phenomenal views of Trapani and its salt marshes and the sea coastline view was stunning.

How much total time would you allow to hike up, view the ruins, and hike down? We are two adults and 2 kids (5 and 8 years old.) Thank you!
Written 13 August 2016
I would say about 15 minutes to walk up and down the hill plus he time of the visit (we spent about 15 minutes walking around the ruins). So about 30 minutes in total.
