About
Located in the historic city center and a few steps from the medieval castle of Charles V, it has two floors: on the first floor are exhibited in chronological order (from prehistoric times up to Roman times) the findings concerning the ancient city of Kroton; while on the second floor are exposed, besides the findings concerning the "neighboring" cities (Krimisa and Kaulon mainly), also the askos stolen in Strongoli and finished at the Paul Getty Museum in Malibù in 1992 and returned to Crotone in 2007. Also in the second floor an entire room is dedicated to the "treasure of Hera", a series of votive artifacts including Diadema of Hera: a gold foil decorated on the outside with a set of leaves (maybe myrtle) and berries interlaced between them.

Just 18 km along this coast, this area is the stuff of legends and myth. The pantheon of super heroes are all here: Homer, calypso. Ulysses and even Hannibal built a lookout tower, which now remains a majestic ruin of a castle built in the 13th century, strikingly silhouetted against the azure blue waters of the sea.
Divine premonitions have a hook that draws me in every time. Croton's fortunes were predicted long before its foundations had been laid. Possessing a mild climate is a draw-card for any town but to lie in a fertile plain between a river's mouth is a plus in anyone's book.
Great sons that were born here are owed a massive debt by modern civilisation. Think, Alcmaeon, the genius that founded a school of medicine and what a cracker of a mathematician/Philosopher was Pythagorus, who not only left his mark on Croton's social and political life, but also left an indelible love for his theorem, to me in my high school years. To this day i can work out distances and heights of distant mountains that dazzle my femme in as far as she can fathom why i just don't Google it!
There is an iconic, single column, the only one remaining, which stands like an erection on the beautiful horizon, the rest of the family of columns were destroyed by earthquakes. take a ride out of the city, to the promontory which is now an archeological park, standing as a testament to its ancient greatness. The local museum unfortunately is limited in space so so much of what's been dug up is preserved in Reggio Calabria, a short ferry ride a away.
Back in town there are lovely baptismal fonts adorned by animal motifs before you front the National Archeological Museum rich in ceramics, objects from the Temple of Hera Lacinia and coins a plenty to interest the keen observer. there are also plenty of Byzantine- inspired souvenirs fashioned from precious metals sold in the village stores. Crotone specialises in filigree work, onyx and coin reproduction observed at the museum.
If you're bored there is a mighty castle of Charles V which actually thwarted Turkish invasions.

The running Gorgon, the model boat and the gold diadem are worth the price of admission (which is very reasonable, anyway). Well presented with enough English to inform. I learned about Milo, the wrestler, for instance.
Local bonus: when I came inn I asked the mad at the front desk if it was ok to park where I was parked. He came out and indicated that I should park in front where he would keep an eye on my car. He even stood by and indicted, by gestures, how I should maneuver my car. He also checked that I did not have valuables in open view. Try getting that level of service at the British Museum!

Museum is worth visiting, since you can see there quite a lot of archeological finds in one place. It has some interesting information about ancient Crotone from Greece and Rome impires. Unfortunately, lacks information in English and poor lighting does not allow you to properly scrutinize the findings.

Hello, thank you for visiting us. The information (in English and German) is available in the panels at the bottom, the lighting, we think, are sufficient to appreciate the various objects.

It is just magical!
We went on Saturday and by our surprise it was free entrance.
All the value there are awesome, coins, pieces of bodies, jewellery and all the old ceramic that you can imagine.
Fusion of different currents Egypt/Roman/ Greek
The most stunning The Hera Lacinia tiara is truly impressive precious art made 2700 years ago.
If you go during the week it Coast 4 euros.

How much trouble can it be to include information in English, except for the three (3) items in English? I'm sure the museum is very interesting and looked forward to learning about Crotone's rich history, but very disappointed about the lack of accessibility for non-Italian speakers.

You really get to discover the historical importance of Crotone and the Greek origins of the surrounding area and why it has such an un-Italian sounding name!

For only 2 Euro you get to see a world class museum. Whoever does not think it is a world class museum misses the point of archaeology. To a large extent some of the findings displayed here are way more interesting and vast that in the national museum in Reggio. Objects and the tomb findings from the temple of Hera are all unique. Although very little English information, it is easy to understand the Italian when one can see the objects. Crotone is a beautiful town. The museum is a short walk from Pythagoras Square.

Surprisingly large collection in a building that does not appear very large from outside. It is all well displayed and well explained in English (and even more if you can read the texts that are only in Italian). But what makes this an absolute must for anyone within travelling distance is the superb collection of finds from the excavations at the Temple of Hera at Crotone.

This is not a world class museum, but they have done a nice job with the displays of local archaeological findings. Most of the explanatory information is in Italian but many of the artifacts speak for themselves. It's worth a visit but don't plan to spend a long time here.
