I had the opportunity to visit "The Castle" before it was restored. I would have preferred they left it as it was from the battles that took place both inside and outside its walls. Dozens of Brits and Germans were killed fighting for possession of it. The Germans blew a large hole in the wall facing the Monastery in an attempt to re-capture it after the British forces captured it several days previously. They succeeded in doing so. Unfortunately, the hole was filled in during the restoration process. The entire castle was covered in bullet and artillery shell hits both inside and outside the structure. Unfortunately, they are no longer in evidence and what remains today is the sanitized Disneyland version of the Castle after it was restored. It is kind of sacrilegious to restore a place that, in its former condition, showed the visitor the actual battle scars that many soldiers sacrificed their lives, and the visitors would get a chance to experience what took place there firsthand. At the time I was there. there were quite a few leftover inert spent rifle and pistol shell cases still littering the ground from the battle at the Castle. Fortunately, the unrestored tower still bears the scars of the battles that took place there.

No sign of any activity and no notice boards saying about entry times etc. Looks like the project has been abandoned. Real shame given its importance in the battle.

Many people will probably pass this without realising its importance in the battles for the monastery. It's 'the castle' in most accounts. We were lucky enough to be able go inside the fence and get a closer look where you can see right down into the town almost as well as from the monastery, but you are overlooked by the monastery all the time you are there.

A classic example of being between a rock and a hard place for the soldiers that fought and died there.

Yet another scene of vicious fighting in WWII, a place with great. Jews and historical pieces inside that have not been over-touristified. Well worth a stop on your way up to Cassino, if it's open.

We've watched this restoration over few years coming to this area. Huge crane on the skyline the lot. What I don't know is why? Who spent the money doing it up and why bother, we've never passed it open and actually as a ruin it looked great on the skyline! Basically you will pass it when driving up to Montecassino, no need to stop

The Rocca Janula can only be reached if you have your own transport. If you travel by coach or local bus you will only get views of it from the hairpin bends.
It appears to have survived the bombing although refurbishment can be seen in the area around it. The gates are locked so photographs can only be taken through the gate if you have the opportunity to stop.
