About
Cassino War Cemetery lies in the Commune of Cassino, Province of Frosinone, 139 kilometres south-east of Rome. The site for CASSINO WAR CEMETERY was originally selected in January 1944, but the development of the battle during the first five months of that year made it impossible to use it until after the Germans had withdrawn from Cassino. During these early months of 1944, Cassino saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Italian campaign, the town itself and the dominating Monastery Hill proving the most stubborn obstacles encountered in the advance towards Rome. The majority of those buried in the war cemetery died in the battles during these months. There are now 4,271 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated at Cassino War Cemetery. 289 of the burials are unidentified. Within the cemetery stands the CASSINO MEMORIAL which commemorates over 4,000 Commonwealth servicemen who took part in the Italian campaign whose graves are not known.

The Commonwealth War Cemetery and Memorial is a stately and gracious reminder of the human cost of war, with carefully aligned tombstones and other markers. Stroll thoughtfully through them to find some of the names and dates and the unit insignia or religious emblems. Beautifully kept flowers are found throughput the memorial

I am always fascinated by cemeteries especially in contrast to American military cemeteries. This cemetery is beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth. It is yet another reminder of the cost of war. The flowers on the graves are gorgeous! I highly recommend a stop here if it is not included on a tour.

We came here looking for my husband's namesake, having been forearmed with the details of his place in this sacred burial ground. Sooo many graves, and this is only 1 of 6 in the area! We found him. This was the very saddest visit of our tour through Europe. I think only people with a person to visit will come here. Spare a thought then, for the 10,000 residents who also died. And the men were soooo young. What a costly and fatal battle this was for so many.

Please be aware we parked in the public car park and went to look at the Cemetery.
When we returned we had been robbed , they took all of our luggage , valuables , passports , money , flight tickets , everything , it's shocking and heart breaking.
Apparently a New Zealand chap had the same happen to him last week while he was paying his respects to a relative who died at Cassino.
Everything was in the boot and out of sight but I guess they were watching arrivals , I know I shouldn't have left stuff in the car , BUT please learn from my mistake !
Apparently the police know this is a common problem at this car park, perhaps a bit naive to think they might try to catch them or stop them with some sort of a sting operation !
I've travelled a lot and always been careful, this was a 10 minute unplanned stop ! I'm always careful and will be even more careful in the future.
Hey ho a sad situation please take note.

I went to visit the grave of my granddad. I went with my mum and dad, my husband, our grandson and other family members. The cemetery is beautifully maintained. It was the first time that we had been to the grave and it was lovely to see that his final resting place and the resting places of all of the others lost during the war are maintained with the dignity that they deserve. The cemetery is wheelchair accessible and has designated disabled parking.

Within sight of the famous monastery and the battles over it, this is a place to remember the fallen. There are names of those lost in action but without a body.

You can watch movies, read books, but until you actually stand before and see just how imposing this battlefield was, it males the courage of those who fought here that much more intense. Cudos to those who maintain this and other Memorials like it.

Very impressive memorial. So sad to see how many soliders lost their life fighting for freedom. Today the area is so beautiful and peaceful and it’s hard to imagine something so horrible happened in the same place.
It’s free to visit. There’s a parking lot near b

We stopped here on our Trafalgar tour of Italy while on the way from Rome to Amalfi coast. It was a short visit but the cemetery was peaceful and was a reminder of the history of the second world war in Italy. It was worth a stop.

We traveled to the war memorial to honor my great uncle Lester Sisson, who died in the battlefield here during WWII. The memorial and cemetary is beautifully cared for. The inscriptions on the graves of the fallen solders is heartbreakingly beautiful. But travelers MUST be warned-our car was broken into in the parking lot and all of our belongings were stolen! I spoke with the groundskeeper who was very nice, but sadly reported this was not the first time and it is not uncommon for your car to be broken into while visiting the memorial and cemetary. This is beyond disgusting to me and something that ALL travelers need to be warned about. This beautiful place is a prime tourist spot in this small town and a sadly, a prime location for thiefs to target travelers.

Is the abbey at the casino in walking distance of the war memorial
Thank you
Lorraine

No- you will need a car. The Abbey is on the top of a very long winding road and up a steep mountain. You could walk it but you would have to be very fit I would say.
Hope that helps.

Written 22 May 2016
I would like to know if there is somewhere where I can organise a flight a hotel and a visit to the cassiano war cemetery
Written 22 May 2016
from Rome take any train to the south (like to Naples) that stop at cassino .The cemetery is located approximately 1 kilometre from the railway station in Via Sant Angelo and visitors arriving by train are advised to take a taxi from the station.
