During our recent holidays in the Dolomites we once again respected the tradition of covering several sections of the Alte Vie and especially the n. 1, which - without taking anything away from the others - is perhaps the most varied and complete. We had yet another confirmation of this last August and September, seeing peaks, valleys and landscapes that have been known for some time and yet always surprising.
Widely described and well documented photographically in my previous reviews, I can only recommend it for its incredible beauty and grandeur, while recommending that you inform yourself in advance about its characteristics and the state of the paths, as well as tackling the journey, even the shortest, adequately equipped. Happy mountain!

Great hiking in exciting mountains with the chance of relaxation in the evening in one of the many huts with great food and drinks for a very reaasonable price.
The Via Ferrata at the end makes the whole adventure even better

There are several alte vie dolomite, the classic being the 100 miles from the lake of Braies to the outskirts of Belluno. It is equivalent, but far shorter than the Pacific Crest Trail and it has a well market trail crossing the best part of the Dolomites at high quota, mostly between 2000 and 2500 meters. It is not technically difficult and it will take about 10 days. The trail crosses many passes which provide opportunity to resupply or to do a day hike. Because of the altitude, parts of the trails can be closed until early July and early October. Aside for crossing the most spectacular parts of the Alps, the advantage is that every few hours you encounter a rifugio, usually a very civilized hut where you can sleep , eat and drink. Unlikely those in the AU and New Zealand which provide no more than a basic shelter, those are comfortable and cozy. Some have private rooms, elaborate menu and even wine list. There are excellent website providing all the informations on the trail and rifugi.

This is an awesome multiway hike staying in nice rifugios, great coffee as everyone has espresso makers, decent breakfast and dinners. Great beer and usually wine. Some places have trams close by so the rifugios are crowded. Always have reservations before you arrive.

The hike is not technical but it is long (10-15 days). I only did a two-day section of it. Along the path there are Rifugios which have bathrooms, food, and bunk beds. Bring a sleeping bag for the Rifugios as they charge extra otherwise. The food is good, and not too bad of price considering the location. I love the Dolomites; the peaks are rocky and steep, very dramatic.

These are some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. I have been hiking these routes since I was a kid. Spectacular! You can go from refuge to refuge without descending into the valley for a week or so. Perfect for mountains lovers.

We were taken to this restaurant for lunch by a local contractor who's factory we were visiting. The service was impeccable and the food was stunning. If you like your wines remember you are in prosecco country. All the local wines were well matched to the food.

Wonderful week from shelter to shelter accompanied by a professional and attentive Guide, the undisputed protagonist of the dog that followed us everywhere without hesitation and never behaving in an egregious way

I wondered if I might be able to pick your brains for advice on the Dolomites Alta Via 1. All websites seem to suggest going North to South, however due to accommodation availability we seem to be going South to North from La Pissa to Lago di Braies. We are in Italy from evening (flying to Venice) 4 August to 15 August.
So far we have:
5 August - Rif Pian de Pantana
6 August - Rif Carestiato
7 and 8 August - Rif Tissi
9 August - Rif Citta di Fiume
10 August - Rif Averau
11 August - Rif Pederue
12 August - Hotel Pragser Wildsee Lago di Braies
Is this achievable?

We will be hiking Alta Via 1 starting July 1st. We know there has been heavy snowfall in the last couple of weeks and it remains too cold. Is it realistic that the snow will have melt within 6 weeks or is that even impossible? We are experienced hikers but do not want to take the risk of hiking in snow for most of the time... it would be a pitty though as we really look forward and have made reservations for all rifugio’s. Thanks

Grazie.

My partner and I are hoping to do some hiking in the Dolomite area around June 5th and 6th. Our hope is to take a train into Belluno and then bus to a trail head from their. We found one option, being a hike out of Nevegal. Does anyone know of other options? We are interested in staying in a Rifugio or Hut but can do BnB's or hotels as well. Thanks!
