Piazza Arringo is one of two grand squares in Ascoli Piceno. You will want to see both if you are visiting the town but it’s fair to say that of the two, Piazza Arringo takes a backseat to the more beautiful Piazza del Popolo.
Piazza Arringo was our starting point for exploring the town’s historic centre. It’s a good starting point because the small Tourist Information centre is located just inside the main doors of Palazzo dell Arrengo.
From here, we walked along Corso Mazzini to Piazza del Popolo and tiny Piazza Roma, before doing a loop back to Piazza Arringo.
There’s a lot to see in the piazza. It’s long and narrow and is lined with palazzos. The largest one, Palazzo dell’Arengo, houses a museum and art gallery. The museum has a modest fee but you can wander out the back into the small manicured garden for free. Here, you’ll find a dozen or more marble busts of prominent locals alongside remains of ancient Roman fragments and sarcophagi. It’s like a mini open-air gallery. It’s a well-hidden secret and unless you know its there, you wouldn’t think to look for it.
The Cathedral of St Emidio and Baptistery dominate one end of the piazza. The Baptistery seems to be frequently closed but the cathedral was open quite late when we were there.
A smaller but charming feature in the centre of the piazza are two matching travertine fountains. They are decorated with fantastical bronze horses with scaly dragon-like bodies and trident tails. Tiny bronze mermaid cherubs dance around the base of the main pedestal and a large bronze leaps from the centre of the basin.

This square normally plays second fiddle to "Piazza del Popolo", but is equally worth it. Large and open, great for some group photos. Also many food merchants around and this is where the tours normally meet. You can park nearby

This large, open Piazza owes its name to the “arringhe” (speeches) which took place here during public assemblies. During ancient times, there was a large elm tree in the center of the square, which has now been replaced by lovely tins travertine stone fountains with sea horses, fish and gargoyles in bronze sculptures by Giorgio Paci. The Piazza houses the Duomo, the Baptistry, the City Hall and the Palazzo Panichi.

I know I'm giving this piazza a lower rating than most of the other reviews in English. I just don't find anything particularly charming, or interesting about this place. My opinion changes slightly when there's a local market going on but that's usually only on the weekend and, once you've seen that you've seen it. It is truly a local market and is great for seeing what kind of stuff might be of interest to the locals but it's not one you'll be shopping in as a tourist. If you go to the cathedral, which you should, you'll be at one of the piazza and can decide how much time you'll spend there. Depending on which end of the piazza you enter from, when you leave go out the other end. You won't get lost and you'll get to see more of the town.

Thanks for reading. I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.

After Piazza del Popolo, this is the nicest square in town, featuring the Arringo Palace, the cathedral and the Baptister.
It is a wide lively square with nice bars where people relax after a stroll in the old city. Watch it at night as well, where the lights give a magical atmosphere

We visited this piazza on a hot summer’s day. It was not busy so the piazza was more viewable. A few people were using the attractive fountains to cool themselves off.

This piazza is not so beautiful as Piazza de popolo but if you are walking around in the city center you will probably see this as well. Surrounded with old buildings and the Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio is located here.

This is a lively place at any time. If you're looking for some very cheap clothing or shoes, the piazza is full of stalls on Saturday morning. At other times it's good for people-watching or just sitting in a cafe.

Okay, not the main square in the town but a great place to simply watch the world go by. The sea horse fountains are a photo opportunity. The square is also home to the Duomo and several cafes one a gelateria also.

a very beautiful square (my number 2 in Ascoli). I love the horses fountains (it's drinking water!!!) and the nice bars along the side. Stop at the corner for a bag of Olive Ascolane, the stuffed and fried olives, delicious!
