    Awe inspiring Islamic religious complex
It took almost seven years to build this gigantic complex of minarets, prayerhalls, dome, arcades, walls and gardens. Hence tremendous effort went into the interior design and ornamentation. In 2001 it was finally completed. The result is an awe inspiring experience. For some reason comparable to what happened in Europe during the contra-Reformation: use the arts to establish intimate ties with the ordinary citizen and get his support. The tile work, the carpets and chandeliers, the wood carved doors and ceilings, the materials used, the gardens all are of superbe quality. No money was spared to realize an effect of reverence. Plan your visit, as the complex is vast (it is not like visiting some mosque). Non-muslim visitors are only allowed in between 8 and 11AM. There is no charge. Unlike in Abu Dhabi there are abayas for rent near the premises, but it is better to dress up (very) conservatively before you go. Most visitors arrive and go by car. Bus number 1 from Ruwi bus station stops at Al Azaiba from where it is another 20 minutes walk to the complex.

Best to do with a guide, audio tour not great
Arrived here appropriately covered for the ocassion in melting hot weather with an audio set and headphones hanging off my head scalf. Was absolutely lovely inside, so clean and pretty and I was particularly taken by the 8 tonne chandelier, must cost a fortune to light that! If I was to do the visit again I would ditch the audio set and pay for a guided tour.

    Serene and breathtaking
It’s a must visit when you’re in Oman. As long as you dress modestly, you’re free to explore the mosque and it really is breathtaking. The intricate carvings, the carpet, the chandeliers to everything, even the perfectly manicured gardens are beautiful.

    Very impressive building
The mosque is a very impressive building and for me a must see in Mascat. We had a guide who walked us through the building and gave a lot of explanation e.g. how to pray, how to wash before praying and so on. The mosque is a very impressive building with a lot to see. Impressive because of the size and dimension, the make, the decoration, the colors and also the cleanness. The only think to criticize is the fact that for a place where hundreds of tourists are expected per day the washrooms are heavily undersized, so expect long waiting times.

    Amazing Place.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is surely the highlight of any visit to Muscat. The detail of the buildings is amazing, and it's white walls and golden dome seem to glow in the bright sunshine. The main prayer room is beautifully decorated. Go there in the morning to avoid the heat of the day, the mosque closes to non Muslims at 1:30 PM and is not open on Fridays.

    visiting muscat grand mosque
The Muscat Grand Mosque is a stunning architectural masterpiece that truly deserves a visit. The intricate details and grandeur of the mosque are simply breathtaking. The sheer size of the mosque can accommodate thousands of worshipers at once, yet it remains peaceful and serene. The mosque has strict dress codes, so be sure to dress appropriately. The friendly staff are always willing to assist and answer any questions you may have. Whether you are a Muslim or not, visiting the Muscat Grand Mosque is a must-do activity in Oman. Overall, an unforgettable experience that should not be missed!

    Outstanding experience
This was a truly amazing experience for us. The mosque is open on select days between 8 am and 11 am. The entry is free. The main hall interiors are breathtaking. The carpet was apparently handwoven at site and took 4 years to complete. It is also the largest carpet in the world. There is some very intricate work with real gold inlays. There is obviously a dress code - women need to cover their head and hands and feet need to be covered as well. Men need to wear full trousers. Photography is permitted both inside as well as outside. Not to be missed if you are visiting Muscat.

If I could give it 6 stars I would
Amazing! Such a beautiful place, stunning architecture, incredible sights, peaceful and stunning surrounds. Make sure if you are in Oman that you time your trip to allow a visit here. We came with a guide and had the opportunity to talk to some of the people who work here. One of the best experiences and places I have been.

    Breathtaking
What an amazing place, just beautiful. We opted to go without a guide and found there were still people attached to the mosque who gave their time to tell us more about the great prayer room. We also stopped at the Islam guest centre and chatted to a group who supplied us with dates and water and lots of information.

    Beautiful & Humbling
A beautiful & humbling experience. The sheer craftsmanship & splendour of the Grand Mosque takes your breath away. If you’re in Muscat, make sure you don’t miss this unique opportunity to glimpse this religious/architectural wonder. Calming, spiritual, stunning. Though culturally different, the architects/builders of the Mosque share a common devotion to architectural/spiritual splendour with the creators of the great Christian Cathedrals. Beauty on this scale isn’t defined by faith or believe - just the universal quest for perfection.

Stunning and not to be missed. Ideally get there for 8.00 am and go directly to the main prayer hall, we had the place to ourselves for a few minutes. Later you may encounter crowds from cruise ships which will spoil your experience.
The dress code for women is strictly enforced but in a friendly way and there is clothing, headscarves etc available.

Wow! Just wow. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. In terms of experience, for me it was right up there with the Golden Temple in Amritsar or Borobudur, the 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Central Java, Indonesia.

The size, the scale, the British architecture. The Italian marble, The Austrian crystals in the chandeliers. Beautiful gardens... stunning, simply stunning.

The serenity, the peace.

But the best bit? Chatting to a volunteer at the end, sipping tea, eating dates and listening to what the Muslim religion is all about.

Perhaps in this World if we all listened more and understood our neighbours better we'd all get on and the World would be a better place. I live in hope, but fear the worst.

I find mosques to be very hit and miss. Most are in the “miss” category as they may look great from the outside but are often pretty dull inside. I found this one to be a major exception as it is gorgeous. It’s probably has the most beautiful interior of any mosque that I have seen. The level of detail and the size of the place are both extraordinary. I was very glad that I visited here. Highly recommended.

This is Oman's largest mosque with a capacity of 6,500 people. Beautiful painted ceramic tiles and wonderful architecture . We visited on a tour and were not allowed inside as the mosque is only open from 8 am to 11 am!
