The Illyrian Tombs of Selca e Poshtme (Albanian: Varret e Selcës së Poshtme) are located near the town of Pogradec in Albania near the village of Selcë e Poshtme. On the right bank of the river Shkumbin at an elevation of 1040 m above sea level, lie the remains of the ancient city of Pelion and the accompanying necropolis. The Roman Via Egnatia led past it towards Thessaloniki. Though there are traces of human activity in Neolithic times, the settlement proper dates to the Iron Age (Illyrian proto-urban) through to the Illyrian urban period (5th to 2nd centuries BC), and reached its height under settlement by the Illyrian tribe of Enchele in the later Iron Age and was also occupied in the Roman period as traces of a municipal building show.

On the one hand, I highly recommend visiting this historic place. On the other hand, I know that I can not too increase your expectations because the place is quite abandoned and touristicaly neglected. The Albanians would like to place this place on the UNESCO heritage list, but until they do some basic steps, it does not make sense.
I arrived by car, there is no real sign on the road. But stop at the highest point passing Selce village. I also recommend returning along the same route as the straight path to the valley is quite adrenaline if you do not have an off-road vehicle.
But we did it! A new road for Pogradec is under construction so to connection in the future will be surely better.
The point is extremely strategic and it seems to be well selected.
Some hidden excavations are perceived around the top. The area is completely unsecured. Maybe there's still Illyrian gold there.

The Selca Tombs are a masterpiece of human ancient settlements, witnessing the traditional way of life in Illyria in 4th - 3rd century BCE. The area is very close to Lake Ohrid, just 40 km from Pogradec. The royal tombs belonged to Illyrian princes and princesses of the ancient city "Pelion". These two-storey monumental tombs are situated inside the rocks, in a very beautiful hill of the village Selca e Poshtme, Pogradec. They were first discovered in the 1940s and were fully explored in 1971. The findings were very impressive and exciting for historians and archaeologists at that time. There are 5 tombs in the area, four of them are inside the rocks, and another one is separated and located in a field nearby.

The way going in Selca it's an adventure it selves. Especially the road to the village which is continuing and narrowing beside a very secondary mountain road in Albania.
Tombs are magnificent and show a part of an impressive civilization of Pelion an Illyrian city dates to century III BC. Tombs are monumental and are building in the side of the rooks of the mountain.
Difficult stand for all the tombs and ruins there as obviously can see total no care at all. A Shepard tries to protect something and mostly play the guide which is so naive an unproductive. It shows to the other hands how less value such an incredible monument has in Albania. It's a very deep pain inside when you live from this place about such irresponsibility..

Difficult to find (no sign at all), but if you get there, a very friendly local in Selca (ms Feride Kumeh, last house to your right when coming from Uraka and you are in Selca) will walk you to the spot really from friendliness, but she didn't refuse a tip;). The tombs are preserved,a city on the top of the hill has been partly excavated, bur is now (again) a domain for sheep and goats.
Impressive rocks, wonderful view. So quiet it feels as if you've just discovered the tombs. We went there on a rainy day, which made it rather a slippery affair (no danger though).

Build in (and the 3rd century tomb on) a hillside, are several tombs and what appears to be a ceremonial area, a bit like a small theatre. The tombs date from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, so are very weathered, certainly on the outside. Some of the tombs show very clear ancient Greek influences. All the tombs have a good explanatory board in English, and there is a path between the different tombs. One can enter the different tombs. The site sadly is littered with trash. The site is also a decent distance from anything else, and taxi drivers might not know where it is, although they generally find out while driving.

These tombs are found deep in the mountainous area of Pogradec. Archeologists believe that The tombs are more than 2300 years old and belong to the Illyrian Kings from the Enkelei Tribes. Highly recommended;)

You will need suitable transport for this. The road is exciting, and quite long. It goes up and up, and then some more up. Plenty to look at on the way. The tombs are care3d for by a very interesting Albanian, who learned everything from the Italian Archaeologist who excavated the tombs. Be sure to repay him, he cares for the place. The tombs themselves are an interesting reminder of the Illyrians, whose history and culture are still being elucidated. The place is very high up in fertile farmland, very good views, some interesting plants around. Apparently these people lived in Ohrid but buried their kings here. A long way to come, so there has to be something special about the site.

What are the road conditions to get to the tombs? Are there guides that we can hire to show us the Tombs? We plan to visit tomorrow. January 9, 2022.

The road is good, but not asphalted only in 1 last km. You can call or email local guides, using the details at the bottom of the page.
