- Susan ROttawa, Canada158 contributionsBeautiful vistasWe made a day of it from Queenstown, travelling Highway 6 up past Makarora to the Blue Pools. Lake Hawea was still mirror flat by midmorning, producing beautiful reflections of the nearby eastern shore. Further along the route, the manuka bushes were in full flower (mid-December), with various scenic stops for parking and taking photos along the way. A beautiful day trip that is recommended.Visited December 2019Written 20 January 2020

Especially against the backdrop of the morning sun. There is a lookout stop point for parking where one can walk up an elevated slope, which gives s fantastic views of the lake. It's just so amazing that NZ ( South Island) has so many stunning landscapes of lakes, mountains & the ocean.Visited February 2020Travelled with familyWritten 26 February 2020
- Irish_Kiwi77Wellington, New Zealand1,270 contributionsStunning viewsIf in the area, lake Hawea is worth a visit. It is another stunning lake in the region. There are a few beach’s near the village and the views are nice there, but I would recommend driving up to the Lake Hawea lookout, which is about 5km drive. The views from there are stunning.Visited November 2020Travelled soloWritten 18 November 2020

We visited Lake Hawea whilst driving arounf the area.
Its very picturesque and whilst we were there there were children fishing and swimming so the lake is used for recreation.Water from the mountains and fast-flowing rivers allow for adventure tourism year-round, such as jetboating and skiing.
Lake Hāwea is 35 kilometres long and was formed during the last ice age.
In 1958 the lake was artificially raised 20 metresfor the hydroelectric power generation at the Roxburgh Dam.
We tried to visit the local pub but it operates limited hours and mostly in the evenings.

Very nice lake, but locals not.
I've met many unfriendly people who seems to sick and tired of tourist of any kind. :(
I'd suggest to not waste time for this town and give them a rest from visitors. Don't spoil your impression of friendly New Zealanders by visiting Lake Hawea town!

Beautiful serene lake with mirror reflections of the adjoining mountains and fields. A place to get away from it all. However, nearby Queenstown offers sports, cafes, hotels, gardens, and excitement.

Beautiful lake - lovely clear water but chilly. On a nice day we went in for a swim and although it felt icy getting in, it was refreshing and I'm pleased I did. Stunning view driving around the lake - its a gorgeous picture

Another stunning lake in the Wanaka area which rivals Lake Wanaka - both are stunning and must sees. Lots of viewpoints with views of bright blue lake with mountain backdrop. Really enjoyed driving alongside/around it.

What a beautiful spot this is away from hustle and bustle of Wanaka. One of most enjoyable bike rides ever along the lake and out east. Wow!! Yesterday ride to Wanaka for lunch 4-5 hours return. Not for the faint hearted. Today drove to Makorora for lunch and up to Haast Pass. Fabulous stay

Beautiful lake, gorgeous reflections. The trail along the lake is multi use - bicycles and walkers. Pretty sunny - wear a hat.
Part of our excellent Backroads tour - walked from trail head to our lunch stop in town - Hawea Store and Kitchen restaurant.

Like many of the lakes around this area of Fjiordland this place is set with stunning scenery all round it and a mountainous backdrop of the Southern Alps. From Wanaka take the road past Albert Town heading towards Makarora and there are several scenic viewpoints along the way. If you have time carry on to the blue pools, which are about an hours drive from Wanaka.
