I have been impressed by the educational aspects of many English Heritage sites, but this is one that needs a wee bit of work. There wasn't enough signage to make up for the absence of an audio tour. After I visited, I found excellent articles on the castle's history online, but the only way I'd get that information at the... More

We were visiting several Castles and Abby's in the area and we had wanted to see Pickering Castle for a while. The ruins are interesting but there were not many information boards so as others had suggested we should have purchased the guide book after all. But the climb to the top gives great views over Pickering and surrounding areas,... More

Without a guide book you'd probably not get much out of a visit to Pickering Castle; it's fairly small with not much to see in terms of ruins. But the views from the mound are great and it's an easy way to while away a couple of hours.

Doesn't take long to get around but worth a look if in the area. Lady in the gate office was lovely, informative and very friendly.

Our 6 year old son had spent the summer term looking at castles at school so it was great to go and look at a real one to reinforce what he'd been learning. Apart from the tower, wall and chapel, there wasn't much left to see, but in spite of this the literature provided was very informative and the views... More

This is an excellent example of a Motte and Bailey castle. Built by William the Conquerer you are able to climb up and get great views over the town. Well worth a visit.

OK so we get to see the castle for a £1.00 locals rate, but a few hoops to jump through to get the pass. So with that in mind I'll review as if I had paid the entrance fee. In which case it starts to look a little expensive if you just march around to 'see' everything. It does provide... More

Kinda dissapointed really, it looked quite good on the Heritage web site but turned out to be some remnants of walls with a couple of derelict towers that we couldn't get into fully. All of us were looking forward to exploring another brilliant castle but ended up on a derelict site with little to explore.
