Been to Pickering so many times and never knew this was here! English Heritage site so admission prices not cheap, but much softened by the lovely Rachael at the entry area, who could sell snow to eskimos. The curtain walls and moat are still in...More

It may not look like much from afar, but Pickering Castle has an amazing amount of remains. We walked up from the town and saw a section of the outer wall that was pretty featureless, but once you are inside you realise the size and...More

We would recommend this castle as a must see for families, especially with kids as they can roam all over the site and get a feel for what it must have been like in medieval times. Graet views from the top tower.

A lovely walk around a fairly compact site - the birdsong was tremendous and the whistles of the steam engines in the valley below were the only sounds we could hear. The guidebook was a really worthwhile buy and we were able to take ourselves...More

This Castle has it all (except a cafe but Pickering town has plenty) as well as a small car park and loos. Although largely a ruin, it still has walls all the way round and various turrets and keeps you can climb up. Loads of...More

We are visiting medieval ruins, castles and abbeys and this was one not to be missed. A superb example of motte and bailey built in the late 1100's - it's incredible what was designed and built over 850 years ago with primitive tools. Most helpful...More

Impressive remains of this 13th century castle, but only the later period chapel intact. Some of the curtain walls and the motte show that this castle was once well defended. Not a very safe place to take small children because of steep drops. One of...More

Had forgotten how big the motte was here. The views from the top are fabulous. Got to see the kestrels thanks to the staff. The site is large and a really good example of a motte and bailey castle.

As English heritage members, this is a lovely castle to pop in to whilst in town. Always a pleasure to visit.

Yes, you can go round in a wheelchair, but there are some restrictions, and dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.

I have visited Pickering Castle many times, and have seen people with their dogs on the castle grounds, and always on a lead. So I am certain that it is allowed.
