A market for Shopping for gems, clothes and artifacts. centrally located. many shops still remain closed post covid. business doesnt seem to be in full swing since covid started. slowly limping back to normalcy. the authenticity of gems cannot be ascertained. one can get a good price if you are good at bargaining. some shops owned by Indians. good handicrafts and paintings available for sale.

My wife and I stayed at Pan Pacific Hotel, which is located across the road from this market, during our holiday in Yangon.
We decided to visit this market to have a look. The central area is mostly shops selling jewellery. Outer areas are mostly shops selling clothes and fabric.

I would say that it is a good place for Tourist to buy all the souvenirs under 1 roof. A huge place where you can buy wood craft, T shirts, Jade, drink their coffee, tea, paintings, etc. You will need to bargain for the right price.

Very average street market. We went here desperate to spend our money on souvenirs and we only managed to pick up one picture that we liked. Lots of shops selling jade jewellery and fabrics, and a few shops selling small souvenirs, but for a place that has literally 100+ shops nearly all of them seem to be selling the exact same things. Very disappointing, the shopping mall nearby with the usual High Street Brand’s actually offered more diversity and we ended up spending more time there than in the local market.
Usually when the wife and I go on holiday we spend loads of time in markets picking up local items for our collections, so very disappointed this one has let us down.

We visited in the hope of buying some souvenirs but left empty-handed. I guess if you were in the market for jewellery and fabrics, then this is the place for you. We found it a very bland experience as it lacked any character as compared to other local markets we visited in Myanmar. I guess we enjoy the more vibrant feel of markets that cater to local tastes with its smells and general chaos, so this market wasn't really for us!

The market is sometimes called as Scott market – its old British name. The market has more than 2000 shops and is popular for Myanmar handicrafts and souvenirs. If you are looking for buying the local Burmese sarong-style lower garment called longyi as a souvenir, then head to U Maung Maung in the main hall – they have a good selection of them all within 10 $.

The market is featured as the asian street market with huge variety of food, green grocery and stuffs.
The tourist could go for a look and leave with out any complaint.

Entire review on Gems shopping since it is the more expensive purchase as compared to the other stuff bought.
1) Hotel Recommended (and for cab to drop off): Pan Pacific Yangon
(it is link to a mall called Junction City with many food varieties. Just head up to the 2nd level and cross the overhead bridge to Bogyoke Market)
2) Avoid Monday as the Market is closed.
3) Best time to visit, Weekdays at 10:45am where shops are just opening, good time to score a deal)
- Take note that is better to visit early as the market closed 5pm sharp where lights off.
- Take note that the procedure of buying a gem is super time wasting especially the time wasted to get the Gems Certified:
--- Process were like: saw a gem you like, bargain (said that the price you want "include certification"), they agreed with the final price, they will send someone to walk with you to the Laboratories on the 2nd level, wait, get the certificate, return to the store and pay. THE PROCESS REPEAT again with a new vendor or another new stone you see that you wanna get.
---------CERTIFICATION: there are 3 labs on the 2nd level of the Bogyoke Market, based on the certificates we received (Certified 2 gems with 2 different Labs on the 2nd level). We prefer the F.G.A certificate as it is more professionally done.
---------OKAY CERT: JEWEL House on the 2nd level which we didn't quite like how the Cert came out.
---------BEST CERTIFICATE: AGGL which is the highest Lab ranking in Myanmar, a super detail Gem report will be given as shown in the photos (which is inside Junction City and closed at 7pm instead. But it has a longer waiting time and a higher price for cert, thus it depends on the vendor whether are they willing to accept your price with AGGL). As soon as I learnt about AGGL, every purchase I made after, I offer a price "US$x includes AGGL". :P I mean those cheaper Gems no need such detailed report, but maybe the more pricey ones like above US$500?
4) Avoid main street of the Bogyoke Market (where most of the Gem sellers are just there to make money out from tourist).
- For example, I wanna see unheated Natural Rubies or Sapphires, they didn't even bother to show me, they just said "US$2000/carat, you want then I bring out". I walk away thinking "what!!!? Stupid service and idiotic way of selling". These sellers don't wanna waste time. They just wanna make deal, sell to ignorant tourists/buyers.
- On my first day at Bogyoke Market, I was sold a Kyanite instead of a sapphire that was what I asked for. 6carat Kyanite asking price US$800, I said US$200, they sold to me for. If I knew it was a Kyanite which was a much much softer stone, I would not have get it at all. Anyways long story short, I get it checked the following day and return to ask for refund. Paid using Credit card, returned in USD cash, lose some in FX rate but is okay, it is better than owning a stone I don't want.
--- Bad Vendor: Maung Maung San Jewel at "No.7 Central Block, Bogyoke Market".
- Alot of people will prefer buying from the main street because it has a wider aisle, more cooling as there are fans as well as a higher ceiling. More comfortable standing there negotiating etc.
5) EXTREMELY NICE GENUINE Vendor: Myanmar Precious Gems & Fine Jewellery.
I met this vendor on the 2nd day when I went to refund the stupid Kyanite to the dishonest vendor mentioned earlier.
- Than Soe is the boss of Myanmar Precious Gems & Fine Jewellery.
- When I met him on Mid-Jan 2020, his shop is like in those lane behind thus is not easy to find him. But I purposely avoid the shops from the MAIN STREET (Central Block).
- The irony was that Than Soe recently move his shop to a better location at Central Block after I flew off from Myanmar, "Shop 1, No 24, Central Hall, Bogyoke Market". I told Than Soe "if you were in Central Block this time, I wouldn't even have met you as I purposely avoid Central Hall as there were many insincere sellers there."
- I saw Than Soe's gems (wasted alot of his time viewing alot, even those he took out from his briefcase - aka the better stocks), i like some but didn't wanna commit purchase, walk around for more but eventually returning back to him at 4pm.
- Faster got my 2.12ct Peacock Blue Sapphire from him, his Sister-in-law brought me to 2nd level to get it certified but there was a queue before me and then the lab decline me. I was so upset and didn't know what to do. That was when I learnt about AGGL (and googled about it later, as well as asking local friends realise that is the top authority in Gem Lab certification in Myanmar), and that it closes later, rush to AGGL at Junction City, but the waiting time was 45min, I was so worried how to pay Than Soe since Bogyoke Market close at 5pm sharp. They reassure me no worries, I can visit their other store 5min walk away at Central Hotel Yangon (a more flexible timing arrangement).
- After my 2.12ct Peacock Blue sapphire got certified, i went to the Central Hotel Yangon to pay (all along Than Soe's sister-in-law were with me, so I don't have to worry about the way etc).
- Than Soe show me his arts collection etc and even more gems. Trust me, he really is just showing me to share and not like asking me to purchase and omg, i saw the pair of Vivld Blue Diamond sapphire earrings in 18k YG that I like!! Clock is clicking, I don't wanna waste time negotiating, I told Than Soe to sell me at an extremely good price and "pressure him" to agree since we bought quite a number of stones from him already and run to AGGL but then the certificate can only be done by the next day noon. Thus we took the earrings back.
- Than Soe knew I prefer the earrings in WG, he offers to bring us to get it plated immediately ready by the same night. While waiting for it to get plated, Than Soe brought us for seafood dinner.
- After dinner, we went to collect the earrings and Than Soe send us back to our hotel and promise to send the certified AGGL to our hotel the following day as we are flying home.
- The following day, we woke up super early to visit Pagodas and then the 2nd Pagoda we visit was very near Bogyoke Market, we drop by for more gems shopping (with another vendor) and then to collect our AGGL cert from Than Soe too.
ALL IN ALL, super pleased with the gems, the price, the extra mile service. Than Soe was really sincere. He just like to share.. He talks alot like super alot... I think that break down the wall between and able to connect better. Hope this review helps anyone who were like us, super keen in gems and who want to get gems there.
We visited the Gem museum vendors too. Prices were high there. There are good ones def but just expensive.

This is a fair-sized market. I am really baffled how there are so many stores selling the same thing. There are so many gold, silver and gem shops next to each other and while many show they are certified by some governmental agency, I was still concerned, so I passed even though the prices and workmanship were good. There are also clothing stores essentially selling the same thing. I guess it all comes down to how much the consumer can bargain. Quite a way to spend some time browsing or window shopping.

A very large shopping area even though many shops have the same items. Prizes were reasonable to high. I bought some beautiful fabrics but no jewelry since it felt overpriced and I was not sure of the quality making it too big of a risk.

Out of my experience I would say, it will be closed as most of the city/daily life gets to standstill during Thingyan. It's the same in the city, where almost ALL shops are closed. But this answer is not 100% updated. . .

Oui mais je recommande de prendre son temps, visiter plusieurs vendeurs pour faire sa propre estimation et systematiquement demander une réduction (discount). Pour la région, les prix sont intéressants et la qualité des produits bonne.

Hi! Yes, Myanmar does sell real genuine local rubies including other gems :) Myanmar is well known for the quality and price of the gems!
As the market for gems is now booming, many unethical people will try to earn quick bucks out of you by selling you fake goods. A few way I know of to identify the quality ones from the fake ones are:
1. Check out their return policy. // normally the shops selling you genuine gems will offer reasonable and good return policies. The fake ones dont normally offer good return policy.
2. Ask for certificate of authenticity.// You should ask for this even though a fake copy could be made, its just an extra mile to make sure
3. Check the gem itself.//
-Fake gems have scissor cuts and glass gems have rounded edges on cuts.
-Genuine gems are lighter than the fake ones (this is because chemicals are added to make it seem more realistic).
-Fake gems have more sparkle than real gemstones and there is a possibility that fake gems could either be a glass stone or a lab-created stone which glass gems might have tiny bubbles inside or scratches on it buy hardly flaws could be seen in lab-created stones are covered up.
-A fake gemstone will have uneven colour as it could be possible that the stone was dyed to hide flaws.
-Pressed or molded glass beads may have visible seam lines.
4. It is said that you can put it in your mouth to check but I think that's really gross..... hahaha so let's cancel out 4???// "An old test was to put the piece in the mouth. Glass will soon feel warm. Gemstones feel icy for a lot longer because they have higher thermal conductivity than glass. They take heat from your mouth so they themselves feel cold." - taken off the net of beadinggem.
