We walked from the car park in Whitley Bay and as we got closer it became clear that the white blobs on the rocks were in fact seals. On both sides of the island the seals were basking with pups it was magical. There is...More

We visited St Marys lighthouse at the end of a lovely walk along the coast from Cullercoats. If you time the visit when the weather is fine it is well worth it.

We visited this island on a very cold day but there were plenty of seals basking on the rocks and lots of seabirds. A hide with binoculars is available to get close up views. Guides there also to give any information you require. The cafe...More

The setting for this lighthouse is great, surrounded by rock-pools. The museum attached was really interesting. The climb up to the top is a long way up and steep- but obviously that's to be expected! It is a little shabby but it's authentic, I would...More

Me and my friend recently stayed at Whitley Bay for this bank holiday weekend, and found the beach itself beautiful - if ever so slightly freezing (understandably) at this time of year, haha! At the end of our beach walk we headed towards St Mary's...More

So today we decided to stay local and actually go to the top of the lighthouse instead of just looking at it. It's a very reasonable entry fee (£7.60) for families and under 5's are free. Once you've climbed the 137 steps to get to...More

How many stairs to the top of the lighthouse please? and roughly how long does it take? I did this many years ago not sure I am up to it now ! that I am mid sixties. However I am sure the other half will do it so I will have to amuse myself below.

If you google the attraction there is a list of tides/crossing times online, but this does not mean the tea shop etc will be open but you can still walk round the lighthouse and have a scramble over the rocks
