Old Durham Gardens are a short walk from Houghall and are well worth a visit. The gardens are very well maintained by enthusiastic volunteers. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and you can visit the gardens free of charge.

We visited on heritage open day sunday when there was music and dancing and delicious homemade cakes on sale! It is a beautiful tranquil place with stunning views of the cathedral and castle All credit to the volunteers for their dedication and hard work.

In the case of those with mobility problems, the best route by car is via Bent House Lane from the A181, near Dragonville, and you will be able to get out by the entrance to the walled garden.
