Really enjoyed my visit here. The small but well thought out exhibition displays a good balance of artefacts for each relevant period. My favourite periods in history are the Romans and Vikings of which there were interesting exhibits, some original, some replica. I read every...More

Until recently this museum was located in a mill on the river. Now it is centrally located so is far more accessible. It is small and well laid out covering Durham from prehistoric days to modernity. I would allow 30 minutes maximum.

Thank you for your lovely review. This museum is free of charge. We hold free self-led crafts over the weekends too. We are currently working on adding to the displays so it may be worth popping back in the New Year too.

We very much enjoyed their permanent exhibit "Living on the Hills - 10,000 years of Durham". A school group came in while we were there, and we enjoyed seeing what a child-friendly space it is.

After our Castle tour we decided to have a quick look round the Archaeology Museum. It isn't very big but has a lot of interesting artifacts.

This is a very well-explained Archeology museum, and very conveniently placed, in its new site at Palace Green. We particularly were interested in the iron age and Roman period and it didn't disappoint.More

he good news is that it is free. The exhibits were interesting. However, the lighting when we were there was so bad that many of the smaller objects were impossible to see: peering at dark silhouettes was frustrating and uninformative. Maybe the lights were turned...More
