With an abundance of nearby cafes, restaurants, pubs etc., I have no doubt that Elvet Bridge is currently the most used and visited bridge in the city.

It was built in the late 12th century on the orders of Bishop Hugh le Puiset and originally would have formed part of the controlling and defensive perimeters of the city. There would also have been numerous buildings, shops etc actually constructed on the bridge, which would have seemed like a busy commercial street in medieval times.

There was a chapel at each end of the bridge and the remains of one of these, dedicated to St Andrew, can still be seen in the surviving historic buildings at the east end of the bridge.

This bridge is at the heart of the city and so you cross it regularly on strolls around, but it is also grand in itself

Connecting Elvet and Old Elvet to Durham City Centre is Elvet Bridge, a wonderful looking old Bridge that is most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a trip to Durham.
A beautiful medieval bridge constructed between 1160 AD - 13th century, its a great looking stone arch bridge, Grade I listed ,in my opinion its the most beautiful of several bridges that span the River Wear.
The views from the bridge are superb and either side of the bridge are some of the best pubs, bars and restaurants in Durham, its just a fantastic place to visit.

Durham is full of bridges and this one is right up there for being picturesque. Shops at either end. There are bette view points to be had but this is not bad at all. Was very close to our hotel so we walked along it quite a few times each day. Not exactly the worse walk!

This bridge is several hundred years old and is quite picturesque. It is built on a slant as has shops at either end. The views are not as good as from other viewpoints in Durham.

When walking this bridge takes you into the city centre. Below are good views of the river and the businesses below the bridge. At one end the shops start and there is the historic Klute nightclub

This bridge is average but it’s far too busy and so many buskers. The views are decent though that why it’s not 1 star.

Whilst exploring Durham city centre you will walk over this bridge as there are shops and restaurants on both side of the water.

The bridge is not an attraction in itself, but does offer great views of the Castle with the Cathedral in the distance. Walk over the get to where you want to go and maybe pause for a moment to look at the views in passing.

A very striking bridge in the middle of the town giving access to both sides of the river. Whilst the centre is quite hilly the bridges make it easy to explore all areas.

I have crossed this bridge hundreds of times and never tire of looking down at the river, seeing rowers go by and wildlife. The river as seen from this bridge takes on so many different atmospheres depending on the weather conditions and the time of day. There are numerous cafes and restaurants on or very nearby this busy crossing of the river.
