A wonderful piece of history within the historic town of Beverley well worth a visit and to read about the history on the plaque. Walk through turn left and walk to the wonderful Westwood and onto the Racecourse. Note the Georgian houses on either side of the Bar.

This is the only bar left of the original seven bars connecting the protective wall around Beverley in days of yore! Well worth seeing, such a lot of history in those bricks!

One of the oldest brick built arches and possibly the adjoining property Bar House was visited by Charles 1 with his sons after returning to York having been refused entry through Beverley gate in Hull

There were supposedly seven bars that protected the town of Beverley but this is the only remaining structure left, there were special designed buses that could travel under the bar.

Situated just off the Market Place, the North Bar is the only remaining bar or gate into the historic town of Beverley. Well worth a visit if you are in town.

Although this place is of some historical interest, there is not much to see and it is not much more than a traffic through fare. I suggest you include it in a walking tour of Beverley for other purposes - there is a very pleasant little park nearby (Coronation Gardens) which merits your time more - but don't make a... More

As a resident of Beverley I feel someone should add a touch of realism to some of the comments. It is striking and unusual. Agreed. However it is a traffic light set at one end of a shopping street. There are loads of reasons to visit Beverley but there is literally five seconds of information to read.

Beverley has a rich history with a diversity of trades which contributed to the town's economic prosperity. In the early medieval period Beverley was the tenth largest town in England. Beverley Bar or North Bar as it is known is the only surviving of three medieval entrance gates. With an early use of brick North Bar was built between 1409-10... More

This rare brick gatehouse has survived from the 15th century when it formed part of the town walls. It is still worth the short walk past St Mary's church to admire its quirky but attractive architecture. Whilst in this part of the town, admire the lovely Georgian terrace next to it on North Bar Within, and the very unusual black-and-white... More
