The island fastness of Lochleven is associated with many colourful events...

The island fastness of Lochleven is associated with many colourful events and has been visited by countless distinguished personalities during its history. Some of those taking the boat across Loch Leven came of their own accord, including King Robert Bruce (in 1313 and 1323). Others were held prisoner within the castle's walls - such as Robert, the High Stewart, in 1369, two years before his coronation as Robert II, the first of the royal house of Stewart. But the castle will be forever associated in the memory with another Stewart sovereign, Mary Queen of Scots. She first visited in 1561 as a guest of the owner, Sir William Douglas. But her last stay, in 1567-8, was as his prisoner. It was at Lochleven that she was compelled to abdicate her throne in favour of her infant son, James VI. The castle walls held her for less than a year. In May 1568 she escaped across the loch and before that month was out she was in exile in England. She never saw her native land again. Accessed by small passenger boat. Sailings run on a shuttle basis to and from the island on demand. The trip is about ten minutes each way.

Great place to explore

Took a boat trip to the island with the family. The children loved exploring the ruins and it would be a lovely spot for a lunchtime picnic.

A short boat trip across to the island where you embark to spend time brushing up on your Scottish history. The castle is interesting because you can visualize the size of rooms in both the rear circular annexe and the main building. Spectacular view back across the loch to Kinross House. Worth a visit.

This is a very small castle....ruins, actually. Interesting, but we spent a mere 45 minutes here. You must purchase tickets on the mainland in order to take a small boat to the island where the castle is located. The grounds are lovely, and if one were to bring a picnic lunch it would be a nice place to linger while... More

As a Historic Scotland member was out for a run with my wife on a nice sunny day (few and far between in Scotland ) and thought as we were passing by Kinross what a nice twist to the day if we had our picnic on the island at Lochleven. Only to be sorely disappointed to learn that you must... More

I thoroughly enjoyed taking a small boat over to the island and being left there for awhile to nose around. The weather cooperated: rain, overcast and sun...:) I was grateful for the plaques that explained what and where everything was. The only problem was that the GPS in my rental really couldn't find the exact location for the boating tourist... More

A small boat takes you across on a 15 minute trip to the island. There are few facilities here, but we took a picnic and sat at the picnic tables. Sadly joined by rather too many midges. The castle, which is largely derelict, is interesting, and there are lots of plaques explaining what everything is, and bringing it to life.... More

A visit to the Castle should not be missed if you are coming to Kinross. The boat trip over the Loch is a pleasure with loads to see and the Castle is an amazing place to spend a few hours wandering round and taking it all in. Loads of history attached to this Castle, it being a temporary prison for... More

We love Loch Leven Castle. It is a great day out and the children love taking the boat out to the castle. Make sure you call ahead to make reservations.

We had purchased a Historic Scotland 3 day pass so did not have to pay at the location for our visit. Luckily we arrived just in time for the next boat so had no wait. If however you are not so fortunate there is a small cafe and gift shop. We boarded a small boat, 12 passenger max, to the... More

One of the places that you can visit while in Central Scotland. If you can visit on a sunny day it is an ideal place for a picnic.
