The herds of deer and the ground nesting birds were captivating - after a good walk I sat at the water's edge enjoying some magic moments. Totally unspoilt and a place for reflection and awe inspiring.

A walk from the car park to the lake and lots of walks around the area. Our visit was made special by the herd of red deer grazing in the grassland leading to the lake.

It was very windy, and rain, yet we did what was posted as 8 miles - do the left side first, as the other side is mostly a road. You go by a cottage that Queen Victoria had purchased. Lovely lovely

Fabulous walk around the Loch with options for easy to moderate abilities. Bring a lunch or snacks for the 8 mile loop.

The 8 mile walking circuit round this loch is truly wonderful. The scenery is dramatic and rugged with the tranquil loch as it's centre piece. It is so peaceful and you feel the whole experience is doing you the world of good. Thankfully the only...More

No there is no bus or train to the spittal, but you can get a taxi in Ballater, if you can find the fish and chip shop there's a taxi company on the same road. I have taken a taxi, walked and cycled the 9 odd miles to the... More

Very easy. Cross the bridge in Ballater, turn right and follow the signs. Easy, but it's a serious walk and best done on a bike
