Colchester Arts Centre - the little church with the big attitude deep in the heart of Essex.

Well that's how we describe it anyway. It sort of works, it at least gives a flavour of what we're about.

Because just how do you describe a venue that can put children's entertainer Palfi the Clown on, on the same day as Cradle of Filth? Where a Farmer's Market in the morning becomes a comedy club in the evening, where folk enthusiasts can sit happily knitting (and they do!) in the exact same spot a ferocious mosh pit of teenage dancing takes place the following night? And where the beautiful historic architecture of St Mary's Church dating back over a thousand years, plays host to some of the newest comics, most modern choreographers, some of the coolest DJ's and some of the freshest talent in Britain.

Over the years we've promoted Coldplay, Eddie Izzard, Graham Norton, Harry Hill, Catherine Tate, Jo Brand, The Libertines, Ash, The Killers, The Strokes, Phill Jupitus, Mick Jones, Bill Bailey, Jack Dee, Count Arthur Strong - all before anyone had ever heard of them of course - plus the likes of jazz legend Ronnie Scott and even the late lamented and much loved Brian Johnston the cricket commentator.

Our passion to present new work, bring great bands and comics to Colchester burns more brightly than ever. Our business is all about fresh ideas, new acts, new art forms and vibrant new ways of working. We can't stand still. We embrace the new, the quirky the original and yes, the surreal.

I have been to the Arts Centre for various shows and always enjoyed the experience. I booked last minute tickets to see Sarah Jane Morris and Antonio Forcione not really knowing what to expect and not really being into jazz but the clip on YouTube looked promising. Well what can I say, Sarah and Antonio were fantastic. His guitar playing... More

This is one of the best Venues in Colchester, its a venue that holds all kinds of events and has surprisingly big acts for a small venue so they sell out fast. but when you see a comedian or band in a venue like this it really does feel like a private gig

This is a gem. Go look at the website. Gigs, comedy, beer fest, drama. All at good prices. We are a lucky town.

I've been a fan of this place for years. I used to go here as a music lover during the 90's. Over the years this place has always impressed. Wether it was for music, comedy or our current favourite reason...... Beer. They have such a wide variety of events. Many of which are free. Beautiful building. Keep up the good... More

Popped into Arts Centre to see if there was anything of interest to decorate our new home. Picked up a few bits. Lovely old building with great atmosphere. Will definitely pop along to more events

I've been here countless times over the last decade and try and go at least once a month which, thankfully, is incredibly easy thanks to the diverse and excellent talent on show at the venue. Very few places in town that'll put on local bands one night, avante garde jazz the next, comedy the next, a play the following day... More

A fabulous night of entertainment - we went to see A CHRISTMAS CAROL by candlelight. This building lends itself well to this kind of event. The atmosphere was friendly and personal. The performance was perfect for Christmas eve. The bar is well stocked and facilities sufficient for the venue. Another great evening

The arts centre has so much on ranging from children's shows to comedy, cabaret, farmers markets and fantastic gigs. I would recommend anyone visiting or living in Colchester to see whats on and I guarantee you will find something to your liking. Last went to see 'killing joke' an 80's band but still excellent stuff.

Love the arts centre, it offers such a variety of entertainment, in a truly magnificent setting.....as a local we attend quite regularly and are never disappointed. At gigs you feel like the bands are actually singing to you personally.....and they always have a hat after....its kinda special.....xx
