The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire's award-winning gallery designed by David Chipperfield Architects which opened to the public in May 2011. The UK's largest purpose-built gallery in over 50 years, we celebrate the achievements of one of Britain's most significant sculptors, Barbara Hepworth, in the city in which she was born and raised.

As well as the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth's working models gifted to Wakefield through the Art Fund, the gallery also holds the collection of the former Wakefield Art Gallery. Alongside collection displays, we also present a regularly changing programme of contemporary exhibitions by world-renowned artists as well as offering award-winning family and learning activities for all ages, a cafe bar and shop - a perfect day out for all the family. Free admission all year round.

A nice visit!

Lots of wonderful paintings and sculptures. The site was modern which I like. There is an activity where you can sow something onto a thin piece of fabric which was nice. The café... read more

A decent art gallery with activities running for people wishing to join in. The staff are friendly enough. Food expensive bit limited in choice. If you like art you will love it. The added play area is fantastic also and keeps the little padawans happy. The view over the river overflow is a nice distraction.

This was my 3rd visit to The Hepworth and I live in the area! I came this time to see a new exhibition 'obedient bodies.' The exhibition was exhibited well and provided points for discussion! I particularly liked the interactive aspect of the long sleeved jumpers! The remainder of the gallery apart from the work by Barbara Hepworth I found... More

Whilst the gallery, exhibitions and activities for the little one were quite good, the cafe was poor. I've included a picture of the dry cheese sandwich I paid £3.25 for. Also some of the staff in the cafe were not very friendly, particularly the mature lady with very short dark hair; whose role appeared to be scowl at customers. Finally... More

We visited the gallery on a lovely sunny day whilst the craft market was on. I can't make my mind up about the overall architecture of the building though it does have the advantage of standing out. On the plus side the interior of the building doesn't take any attention away from the artwork being shown. There is plenty of... More

Parking round a difficult u bend, meter badly placed, walk over bridge which must have been expensive, to find a concrete modernist building which to my mind is ugly, set in the industrial surroundings of the canal side and weir. Free entry after paying £5 for car park. The old exhibits transferred from Wakefield Art Gallery are worth a visit... More

This Gallery is amazing with a great cafe. The permanent Hepworth exhibits are wonderful and we really enjoyed the 'Disobedient Bodies', 'Approaching Thunder', 'Kettle's Yard', and 'György Gordon' .....well everything really!

Parking for the gallery is on the other side of the river whilst easy to access, is expensive, but then entrance to the gallery is free so it balances out. There is a lot to see and some very interesting works so the gallery is worth the visit. The outside buildings are hideous (OK, that's just one person's view) but... More
