Another stunning section of the South Downs Way. And this one may have seals.
Yes, you can drive to the Beach Head car park, run up to the point, take your photo of the lighthouse and then drive off. Or you can walk the coastal path to Beachy Head either from Eastbourne or from the Seven Sisters Country Park or the Birling Gap, depending on how far you want to walk and whether you want to take in the Seven Sisters. This time we were staying in Eastbourne, so we did it from there. It will take you about an hour and a half from Eastbourne Pier, or an hour from the Helen Garden at the West end of Eastbourne. There are several navigated footpaths at different levels up the hill between Eastbourne and Beachy Head and we did the elevated path to get the views on the way there and the lower cliff level path on the way back. Whichever way you go head for the RAF bomber command Memorial. From here if you go down towards the cliff you will see the shingle headland jutting out to the sea which had several seals on during our walk. You are close enough to hear them but fortunately not smell them. Then its not far to continue to walk the cliff path to the cliffs viewpoint that gives you a great vista of the lighthouse. As for refreshments there is always the Beachy Head pub, and although this is a member of the Village Pub & Kitchen chain (Mitchells & Butlers), we found it a particularly poor outlet as far as food went, so if coming from Eastbourne you might want to start of end at the far superior Pilot Inn. From here it’s a short walk to the Kiosk Café, from where the various South Downs way walking trails fan out.

    Lovely view
One of the most natural beautiful spots in our visit to the UK. A superb walk to the old lighthouse on the cliffs though one has to be careful not to go towards the edges as the chalk is soft and can break. It does require some walking up and down and so better have a good pair of shoes for the visit. Very close to this is the Birling Gap where one can visit the beach via a staircase.

    Cliff top walk
Returned here in July 2023 on a warm but windy afternoon. Walked from Beachy Head to the foothills of Belle Tout lighthouse and then back again. Scenic views along the route, with the cliff edge cordoned off in some places due to risk of erosion. Conditions were quite windy which made uphill walking slightly more challenging in places. Beautiful spot overall and would happily return back here (albeit on a slightly less windy day).

    Usually windy
If you want a short walk then park park around the Beachy Head pub (you will have to pay). Head along the pathway towards the cliff edge past a memorial and naval position point. After 300 years or so you will be greeted by views of the cliffs, Eastbourne and the lighthouse. Don't go too near the edge as collapses of the cliffs are common. Further west you will have a view of Belle Tout lighthouse and the track up to it which has itself collapsed into the sea in places. If you want you can walk to Belle Tout but you may prefer to drive on to Birling Gap. You may have sunny weather but it is often very windy so go prepared.

    A Great View
It was a great experience, with amazing views of the sea and nature. The only advice I give is to wear warm clothes, since there is a lot of wind, as well as comfortable and resistant shoes. The full experience was really worth it,

    Breathtaking views
Came here a while ago now, long than stated on here, however not much has changed and the view is so amazing that more people should come here. The cliffs are breathtaking and you can see the sea for miles and miles. The way the sun glimmers off the water makes photos look exceptional. It really is a place to sit and ponder, though I am also aware that sadly it has a slightly depressing reputation for those who have struggled with their mental health. Great view for a walk with a cute lighthouse along the way. Would recommend.

A lovely walk! You can walk from here to Birling Gap , will be a few hours. If you walk down to the beach here, there is a lighthouse. Really enjoyed it and quite exhilarating, lovely views of the sea and the Seven Sisters.

Nice walk up here, can walk all along to Birling Gap and further. Seven Sisters is very hilly and stay away from the edge as there are regular chunks falling off the cliff

What a beautiful place!
I decided to drive and hour and a half to get there in time for sunrise. It was definitely worth the 4 o’clock start!

Steep & rocky walk at low tide. Firstly, take coins for pay & display parking as the RingGo thing doesn’t work. We were in the car with toilet block in it, which is handy. There is a pub right next door. From the car park It took us 3 hours & 10 mins to walk to the lighthouse & back.
Please check the low tide times before you go. We arrived just over a hour before low tide to begin our journey down the fairly steep cliff top hill which gave us time to get to the beach as the tide was moving out to its furthest point. We went down the “cow gap” trail to the beach, there are a set of metal steps at the bottom, the steps don’t go the the ground, so you have to drop down the last few feet to the ground. It can be very dangerous if the tide comes back and you’re trapped along the beach so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get along the beach if you plan on walking to the lighthouse & back out again..not worth risking your life over so plan your trip well.
Once on the beach it’s about an hours walk to the lighthouse & good solid footwear is advised as it’s a very rocky walk. Once at the lighthouse you can climb the stairs up onto it, there is a handrail that I strongly advise using as the steps may be covered in seaweed.
I’d say about 10-15 mins of our walk was Spent stopping & taking photos but the rest of the time we just pushed ahead to get it done.
The walk back up the hill to the car park was horribly steep & took at least 20mins longer than on the way up. It was exhausting!! …but my 7 year old daughter managed it & i’m pushing 50 & I did it so don’t be scared to give it a go, just be prepared. I went with my wife & two kids, I’m not sure we’d rush to do it again in my life, but very glad we experienced it at least once.
We went in April 2024 on a sunny Sunday morning and it was a lovely but tiring adventure, great view over Eastbourne from the top.

Stunning views, great cafe. Easy parking, free if you are a member of the National Trust. Serviced by frequent buses, that look like a lot of fun.
