France is full of castles, but if you want to get a real feel for 10th Century garrison life visit Puilaurens Castle! The views are spectacular too.

This castle is wonderful, less exploited than some but preserved sufficiently to provide a worthwhile visit. The postcard / photos from the early 20th century and 2007 provide an insight into the spectacular changes that continue to take place in the landscape.

We've been here before. I must say, these are probably the cathare castle ruins i prefer. It's less touristy and very romantic and dreamy. There's long gras moving to and fro in the inner courtyard and most of the time it's very silent. I made some great photos there. Also check out Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Puivert, Las Tors (Montségur should be... More

A Cathar landmark which can be visited in conjunction with the close by castles of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus. There's an invigorating walk up from the car park, but you can also walk up from the village if you're feeling up to it. Get the 'passport', which gets you a reduction off every Cathar site visited as well as allowing a... More

Of all the castles we see it is not the most interesting but still has some standing things and many "nooks" to explore.

The walk up to the castle is not too difficult - take your time, and the view is amazing.... it's easy to understand why a castle was built on this side. It's a bit more difficult to imagine how all the building materials have been hauled up; and even how the former owners (kings & queens) traveled up. A must... More

Our first of three castles in a day! A steep climb up over rough ground but worth it for the amazing views. The French don't believe in health and safety - some sheer drops in places! You'd never be allowed the access in the safety conscious UK! I prefer the French approach to leave it to each individual's common sense!

An interesting Cathar chateau, stunning scenery all around and on the winding road up to the chateau. There is a car park at the foot of the hill to the chateau. There is an entrance fee of 5€ to walk round the ruins. It is quite a steep walk up so need to be fairly fit!!

Puilaurens castle is first mentioned in the tenth century but was entirely reconstructed by the royal engineers after 1255. In the seventeenth century the stronghold was adapted to the use of firearms and several new buildings were erected : The entrance was strengthened by barbicans and a crow nest. Half open towers received a closing wall. A dwelling tower and... More
