The Stave Church in Vik is a fine example of the stave churches in Norway constructed in the early 11th century. We hesitated about visiting churches farther away from Bergen that are more famous but found that the Vik church was the right choice. There was a guide who explained the decorations in the church and the various phases in... More

Seeing a stave church in its original setting (rather than just the open air museum with reconstruction in Oslo) is a must for anyone's visit to Norway. This stave church in Vik is so serene and majestic, worth a visit! We stayed in Stalheim and arranged a private driver (Isak Hommedal) to drive us from the hotel that morning to... More

There is a fee to go in this church, but it was worth it. We got a guided tour from a young man who was very good at answering all our questions. It is amazing that this building has been around so long and thankfully being preserved for future generations. In the area there are two other churches, not as... More

We hopped on an early morning ferry from Balestrand (left at 7:50 am). 15 minutes later we were in Vik. After an easy 20 minute walk that took us though a pleasant town and some farmland, we came to the Hopperstad Stave Church. The church is so unique-the handful of Norwegian stave churches are unlike anything that you'll see in... More

We were pleasantly surprised that the Stave Church opened at 9am, rather than 10am during the summer. Note that you must buy tickets to get inside the Church, which we found well worth the money since the attendant pointed out the features. We enjoyed the 20+ minute walk from the boat dock, taking in the farmland and beautiful day and... More

While in Norway I wanted to see a real Stave church in its original surrounding - so while in Balestrand we took the time. After a short jet across the Fjord on the very busy Bergen ferry, we and three others all walked off. It is a short and pleasant walk thru the town and up to the church which... More

We were staying over in Balestrand and took the early morning (~8am) Norled express ferry over to Vik. Some of the other reviewers have claimed that there isn't much to do in Vik that early in the morning and their reviews weren't too far from the truth. Not much was open that early on a Monday morning and unfortunately it... More

It was my first, and for this trip, only stave church. After reading about the construction of 1000 of these across Scandinavia with only 28 surviving, I had invested a lot of faith in the fact that this would be a beautiful visit. It was! It was everything I might have hoped for and more. The high-speed boat over from... More

With its dark, almost blackened facade, this historic church stands out in the Vik valley. The top gracefully sharpens into a point like a spear. The inside feels medieval, and there are gravestones just outside it.

Unlike some of the reviewers, we drove from Balestrand and took the ~10:15 ferry from Dragsvik to Hella then drove on to Vik. Vik was having an "old cheese festival" and classic car show, which looked like fun, but we had also planned to go to Otternes, so we drove on to Hopperstad. Some sites say the tours (10:00 -...
