About
One of the largest and most comprehensive folk museums in Norway is located only a 10 minutes' walk from the town centre of Molde. The new building Krona opened in 2016, and houses historical footage displays, local art, Bunad workshop, café and museum shop. The Romsdal Museum was established in 1912, and portrays buildings and interesting interiors from the whole region. The town street "Bygata" shows typical Molde town houses from the pre-war era. The museum is situated in a nice park area with benches where you can relax, a duck pond and lush flower beds. There are several smaller museums in the region of Romsdal belonging to the Romsdal Museum: Bud coastal museum and fort, The Fisheries museum on Hjertøya, Nesset Prestegard (vicarage and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's childhood home) in Eidsvåg, The Clothing Factory museum in Isfjorden, Løvikremma Kystgard (coastal farm) in Aukra, Steffågarden on the island of Ona, Veøya vicarage and maintenance of the medieval church on Veøya.

I visited the Romsdal Museum in Molde, the Fisheries Museum on Hjertoya Island and took a guided tour to Veoya Island. I like the overall concept very much, which gives a very good insight into the life and history of the region.
And the Islands are very beautiful and peaceful.

After a nice boat trip we reach the small island, veøya. Exelent guides gave us stories about people and life more than thousend years ago in beautiful surroundings on an island covered by tall trees. Possibility for a refreshing bath innsummertime.
The visit was crowned with a short service in the white medivial stone church.

The main building closes at 4.00 p.m. It houses all the exhibits about the development and the decline of the textile industry. There are also exhibits about the fishing and boat building industries. The museum succinctly explains how people in this town earned a living. The open-air part of the museum closes at 7.00 pm so you can walk around after the main building. The church is the only building that was originally built on the museum land, the remaining building have been transported and rebuilt on the site. The open-air part has a few signs in English. You really need to see the exhibits and explanations contained in the main building before your walk around the open-air area.

Not 100% sure how this place works. On randomly walking up to it from our hotel we stumbled upon a choir performance on a stage next to the museum, the choir where phenomenal so we sat and watched. Once finished I assumed the museum was closed as per what the website said however all seemed open so we walked around. Not sure if an event was happening or if it’s open and free all the tine. Either way the old houses and history are a site to behold.

Our favourite in this museum were the chats with a lady at the reception, a young girl in a house and an elderly lady in the church.
We loved the exhibition of the local photographer, the Kurt Schwitters room and the history room. Everything is presented on a modern way and with care. We had a good lunch there as well.
It was a pity that not all the houses were open. We loved the church and met a young couple that was ging to mary there in traditional cloths. The girl showed me a picture of her in her dress with crown and jewels. The man had his outfit made in the workshop of the museum.

During a cruise to the Norwegian fjords, we visited the open-air museum.
Local guides give beautiful explanations and are ready to answer questions. But since the houses are imported from different places, the atmosphere is not authentic

Hi Inamarom, thank you for your review! I am happy you were pleased with our staff. I am just adding some information in case it can be of use to the readers. All the houses are from the region of Romsdal, so they are local buildings which could't have been preserved and taken care of otherwise. Although they have been moved to the museum area, they have been placed carefully and in an authentic way. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive folk museums in Norway.

Found the village by chance and we were very pleased. Most buildings are originals re-sited from other regions in Norway. There is a 17th century church which is amazing. All staff on site are so knowledgeable they enhance the experience totally. Language is no barrier as their use of English was far superior to our extremely limited use of Norwegian. We spent a couple of hours but could have easily spent longer. Some authentic food is available, some at a small cost, but very tasty. Excellent value for money so thanks to all staff involved.

Thank you very much for your great review! Very nice to read that you had such a good time here! The buildings are all from the region of Romsdal, so it is actually a collection of local and traditional buildings from various time periods.
