In the 19th century, Bergen was Europe's largest wooden city, and its busy, steep and densely built-up streets, squares and alleyways gave it a unique character. There are also few large towns and cities that have experienced as many major fires as Bergen has. The appearance of the city has changed on many occasions, sometimes amidst great drama at other times old houses have been replaced by new buildings and major redevelopments. But Bergen has also taken care of its historic past. Old Bergen is a reconstructed town with approx. 50 Wooden houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Here you will find private homes from various periods, as well as a number of shops and workshops. Countless rooms and objects bring the city's history over the generations to life.

A visit to old Bergen provides some answers as well as a breath of nostalgia. Actors make the stories come to life. How could life in Bergen have been 150 years ago? What did it look like? What did the people talk about? In beautiful surroundings you may meet both landlords and servants from times past.

We have outdoor playground for children, and in the pound you will find ducks and goose.

From mid June until mid August our a la carte restaurant Old Bergen Traceteursted is open daily (closed on Mondays).

In the museum shop you will find traditional cinnamon buns, soft drinks, ice cream, coffee, candy, postcards, books and souvenirs. The museum is open every day from the middle of May until the end of August.

We were here in the winter when the buildings were closed, but still had a great time. It's not crowded then, and you can spend time looking in windows and wandering around. We took a taxi to get there but a bus back to the city center, found it easy to get to.

To be honest it is small, there are about 15 houses here so not worth the hassle to get out from the city centre. If you really want to see old houses in Bergen I advise you to have a walk in the streets of Sydnes (Gamle Nostegaten, Dragesmauet, Dragefjellsbakken, Sydneskleiven) or go up in the Strangehagen, Skottegaten streets, or... Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this "Old Town" Museum. Bergen Pass allows free access and free bus from the town centre (about 10-mins bus ride). Short walk from the bus stop. Well sign-posted. It was lashing down on the day we visited! (Allegedly it rains almost every day, even in Summer; or so our Apartment owner told us!!). Fortunately most... More

Great and calm place. A bit away from the Bryggen. Very few tourists. 50 NOK for the entry. Many buses from the Bryggen take you to this place. There are old marked houses which have been shifted from the Bergen to this place. These were those few houses which survived the great fire of 1300. Some houses are almost 1000... More

Interesting concept to be able to explore the open houses/buildings, however we didn't need long here for our visit and expected more really.

I took my three teenage granddaughters to visit Ole Gamle, I have been many times before as the place is important to me. My Father, his Parents and Siblings lived in one of the houses back in the 1930's. I visited on one occasion with an uncle who was able to provide first hand information on their lives at that... We got bus no. 4 from Bergen and found our way easily to the museum. Free entry for us as we had the Bergen pass. Staff were really helpful and friendly and various houses had actors in. The guy in the merchants house was really entertaining and told us about life back then and the house we were in, making... More

I enjoyed going through the various buildings and pathways but in the rain, it very hard. It's not my favorite. I enjoyed other museums in Bergen more.

Some of these houses are transported to this small village of houses. Its made to let you see how people lived in the early 1900 Its really nice and you can go inside several houses and have a guidet tour.
