- AlanMichaelWardCardiff, United Kingdom2,380 contributionsTo the top for great views over Bergen but quite expensive.Being unfamiliar with the area we used a taxi from the funicular lower station over to the cable car. Buying tickets was easy and views were stunning as our empty gondola died us to the top station which was snowy and icy. After taking photos we enjoyed a drink in the cafe before going back down. We couldn’t find a taxi so walked down the road past the hospital to the main road thinking we’d get a bus back into town. We saw a structure which looked like a public transport station so we cautiously entered and bought tickets before descending three very lengthy escalators to a platform. I think we were on an AirPort Express tramway but it soon took us back into town. Yet another example of very efficient Norwegian transport systems.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 February 2024
- Tilly H66 contributionsFantastic viewsAbsolutely stunning. I wasn’t sure I was going to bother doing this but I am so glad I did. If the weather is reasonably clear then the views from the top are absolutely fantastic. It’s not just Bergen but the mountains and fjords. There are also many trails around the top, although especially if there’s snow and ice around please ensure you have the right equipment. You have the choice of either taking the cable car both ways, or hiking one way and cable car the other. I chose the latter but very unwisely made the decision on the spur of the moment to descend. It’s a 2100 foot drop including 1300 steps and I was in completely the wrong kind of gear for it. Legs were like jelly at the end.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 March 2024
- William MEdinburgh, United Kingdom703 contributionsStunning views (I assume……)We were staying in the Bryggen area and decided to walk through Bergen to the cable car station. The walk took about an hour. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best of weather. We took the cable car up the mountain and slowly watched the view disappearing beneath the rain clouds. Popped into the lovely cafe at the top and had some coffees, buns, etc, hoping the clouds would magically part. They didn’t. We headed back down and walked back to Bryggen. I’m still giving it 5 stars as the service itself was excellent, as was the cafe. Just bad luck we did not get to enjoy the views.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 April 2024
- Iluvtravel1001Sydney, Australia156 contributionsDefinitely worth doingExcellent day out. Caught cable car to top. Views from top are wonderful with a bit of snow covering surrounding mountain. Bits of ice randomly falling down from a tower up there that you had to avoid. Walked down from the top - that was scary as the steps near the top were very icey and slippery (even in our special shoes). Surprisingly it was hard work on the knees (and I consider myself quite fit). Possibly better to walk up rather than down if you're fit enough. The young Norwegians looked amazing jogging up and down!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 April 2024
- Andy141 contributionsDon't Miss!We were in two minds about taking the cable car: would the views be worth it; would the cable car ride be stressy. The answers: yes and no! The cable car never hangs with a great drop like many do, and the ride is just a few minutes. Not a fan of cable cars but it was fine. And the views from the top are great. We hung around for a few hours, as were many others. So relaxing. Then we ate at the restaurant and enjoyed some lunch. We took a regular bus to get there, and there was a little walk up to the lower station. But we saw a shuttle from the city - maybe worth checking it out.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2024
- maaparMount Pleasant, South Carolina967 contributionsNice viewsWent here by cable car with short ride to top. At the top there are various trails which we did not have time to do. Or you can walk down which we did not do.The top itself has great views of Bergen and the mountains but not much else there. A cafe and restrooms are available but in contrast to Floyen there is nothing else to do at the top.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024
- Karen RLeesburg, Florida83 contributionsGreat Views! The view from the top of the mountain is stunning. From the ship we took a taxi, 350KR or about $33 US to the Cable station # 643. There also is a Express bus ( close to the fish market) from the town central that goes up to the cable station. It is about 20 minutes away. At the top is a cute restaurant and many viewing spots along with miles of trails all around. Worth the visit!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 July 2024
- Shawna AtkinsonAbilene, Texas363 contributionsLoved Ulriken! We took the Ulriken Cable Car up the mountain to hike the Viden Trail. The ride up was great and we didn’t have to wait at all. Beautiful views on the way up and at the top! Highly recommend doing the whole hike if you can. It was a full 5 hour hike for us so not for the weak!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024
- MrsHodorPeterborough, United Kingdom410 contributionsWell worth the viewsDefinitely recommend if you are in Bergen! Do: - travel on the tram from Bergen station (Nonneseter) to the station closest to the Ulriksbanen (Haukeland sjukehus) and then a 5 minutes uphill walk - order your Ulriksbanen tickets on the VY app. It's easy and over 67s count as seniors - enjoy the 5 minute journey upward - take pics of the views! - use the loo and have a meal in the café - have a short walk around the top (the guided walks take a while) - take the Ulriksbanen back downhill (it is estimated that walking down takes 5 hours)Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024
- Elijah KVienna, Austria25 contributionsPricey but worth itThe cable car ride is quite expensive, so if the weather is good and you are physically fit, it's probably worth hiking up! Once on the mountain, there is a very good chance that it will be cloudy, in which case you will not see much. If that happens, sit in the cafe for 30 minutes and it will probably clear up. Once it does, the views onto Bergen are fantastic and absolutely worth the climb! If it's worth 400 NOK depends on your physical condition and the size of your wallet, but I personally do not regret spending the extra on such a nice view.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 August 2024

At 365 NOK (return) this is perhaps one of the most expensive attractions you can visit in Bergen and it really is worth it on a clear day. It is much higher than the Mount Floyen, and you can see for miles into the distance across a much wider field of view if the weather is good! The lower station has ticket machines inside the building to purchase although you are encouraged to purchase your tickets in advance.
I bought my ticket online scanned through the QR ticket on the electronic turnstile and waited for some other tourists to join the car before we ascended to the top. During the shoulder season its common the cable car runs when there is waiting passenger/s, rather than to a scheduled service owing to much reduced traffic. Even on the way back down I was the only person in the car. It was even able to run against gale force winds without bouncing around!
The weather at the top was windy and much colder than below, fortunately I wrapped up warm. You can walk around the top of the mountain, including visiting the café/restaurant although be aware toilets and seating are limited! I waited the setting sun out until darkness enveloped the scenery, meaning not only I got a beautiful view of the setting sun, but was able to get a set of photos at night of Bergen as well as those taken in day-time, all across a 2.5 hour period. There are also much fewer tourists come dinner time/dusk!
On a side note, the Ulriken café/restaurant at the top is expensive. Take a drink with you and some food to snack on before you head up to the top. Its tempting to go inside and get something there, but you will thank yourself later!
It is possible to hike up/down, but be aware this is not for the faint hearted owing to the sudden changes of weather, it's steepness and that it is not at all lit. Those that have done it have even said it was worthwhile. The cable car operates until quite late.

We took the cable car up to the top (and back down) and that was a fantastic experience. I'd never been in a cable car before and I loved the pace and panoramic view as you went up and down the mountain. It was pretty crowded but perfectly okay to stand (not like taking a bus with the jolts). We went to the top pretty early and it wasn't very busy for about an hour but definitely got busier as the morning progressed. There is a cafe with local food and alcohol that has great views but otherwise nothing else to purchase food (and no gift shop). You can zipline and there are a lot of trails deeper into the mountain. We pretty much hung out in the cafe and took it easy, enjoying the views. You can walk up or down the steps but it's a long and steep climb. Tour busses that include the tickets to enter leave every thirty minutes from the square in downtown Bergen, although you can also self drive/arrive and buy tickets before entering the attraction.

Mount Ulriken is a mountain in Bergen, Norway. It's one of the city's most iconic landmarks and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. We reached the summit by taking the Ulriken cable car in Jan-2024. Enjoyed the windy snowy weather at the top. There is one good restaurant available at the top. Cable car took NOK395 for a round trip per person

We went on both the Floibanen and the Ulriken643, and by far the better value was the former. The Ulriken one is extremely expensive for a cable car trip for a few photos at the top. Might be OK if you were doing other outdoor activities while up the mountain but for mere sightseeing it does not offer great value at all. Lovely views from the top, but not worth the price. Steep hills to walk up from the train station for those who are less mobile.

Wow! Mountain Ulriken is Bergen’s highest mountain and the cable car ride only took 5 minutes. We had fantastic views. We had lunch at the cafe and enjoyed watching the sheep from the backside of the platform. We purchased combination tickets which included transportation on the Ulriken Express Bus. You will find a bus parked in front of Norli Bookstore, Strandgaten 1.

395 for return, crazy expensive. Restaurant on top - many waiters at work, little which was served total chaos... Be encouraged to order at the drills, then not possible to order a regular cafe (filter coffee) only these americano, latte etc
.. for filter coffee must order at the dish. The disc is right in front of the front door and very low efficiency.
The outside kiosk has only coffee from the coffee machine intended for private homes. The ride down again, a terrible nightmare when the city's elder guards sit down at the time the track dropped down. Ulrikken, never again.

Bergen, Norway Mt. Ulriken tour
On August 2, 2023 our Azamara Pursuit cruiser stopped in Bergen, the second largest city in Norway. My wife and I took 3 hrs. bus tour offered by Azamara for $159/person. During the drive to Mt Ulriken cable car we were introduced to the history and points of interest. Our guide was not a local person and our driver was very informative during our private conversations with her.
Top of the summit gave us an impressive 360-degree views.
On the way back to the ship some of the passengers asked to be dropped at the city center, but we came back to the ship and after taking a few hours break we strolled back to the city center located within 10 to 15 min leisurely walk.
On the way back to the ship we took a walk through the Bergenhus Fortress, dating back to 16th century.
Weather was great and it was another enjoyable day in our 14 nights Norway intensive voyage with Azamara.

Amazing! We got the first bus from Bergen city centre to Ulriken and were some of the first people up the cable car in the morning, it was so quiet and peaceful (and we were lucky that the sun was out)
It soon got busy so I'd recommend trying to get there as early as you can.
You can walk up / down but it's approx 2000 steps (as in stairs) each way. Many people were doing this and it would have been lovely but I stuck to the cable car each way.
There are many walks and hikes you can go on, not signposted so ensure you know your way and take water / be prepared.
It takes a little longer to reach Ulriken than Floyen but the views from here were absolutely amazing.

It's not easy to locate but it's a great view once you're there. If you're near the wharf, you'll need to taxi (expensive) or figure out the bus system. From the bus stop, it's a not insignificant 15 minute walk uphill to the base gondola. You can buy your tickets there and it's a short ride to the top. During the winter, it's snow covered and beautiful. You can walk out through the snow and down the mountain a bit if you wish. The mountain offers a gorgeous panoramic of Bergen and the neighboring areas. They also have a very stylish cafe where you can warm up, have food and beverages. Overall, definitely worth the trek.

A nice way to see a different view of Bergen. The express bus from the city centre is a good option drops you off right at the bottom of the gondola. The team selling tickets are friendly and helpful.
Trip up is about 5 minutes for good views (on a clear day!)
Nice cafe and restaurant at the top and a variety of walking trails.

I am quite taken aback by the USD $395.00/person cost for round trip passage on this gondola ride. It just seems exorbitant. Don't look for me on this ride during my bucket list trip to Norway ! !

In terms of tickets, we only want a one-way cable car. We are coming off a cruise. What is the most economical way to do it? The public bus, the shuttle bus? I know the shuttle can include cable car prices, but it's a return, and we're only using the cable car one way.

Can someone please clarify this for me. Do you have to pay for a tour to climb the mountain as it seems quite a lot for a guided tour up. Or are you simply able to go up yourself?
