In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

There are a handful of delightful Baroque style churches around Innere Stadt including Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan Church) constructed in 1603 and features a charming Renaissance facade. It is fronted by a nice fountain monument dedicated to Moses which makes for nice view and pictures at the tiny little square called Franziskanerplatz.
While the exterior is nice, it is the Baroque interior that is most impressive, particularly the ornate altar, the work of Andrea Pozzo (1707). Make sure to also see the Johann Wockerl organ (1642) which is the oldest in Vienna as well as other charming features the pulpit and aisle chapels. It is a beautiful nave, one worth spending a few minutes walking through if you enjoy the Baroque.

The Franciscan Church, or Church of St. Jerome, is a Roman Catholic parish in the center of Vienna. Built in 1603 the outside facade is Renaissance while its interior is Baroque. Less popular than St. Peters or St. Stephens, do look up for the ancient organ and ornate sculptures including several of Virgin Mary.

This was one of our favourite churches of the many churches in Vienna.
Very ornate altar with marbled pillars and gold adornments.
We spent few moments here after the noise and busyness of St Stephen cathedral. We were really pleased to find a lovely quiet and beautiful church where we could actually sit and reflect for some time during a busy days sightseeing.

The Historic Center of Vienna is justifiably famous for its amazing architecture and Franziskanerkirche is a great example of the type of church to be found in this busy and vibrant city.
The church dates from 1603 and is a splendid piece of architecture, the front facade of the church looks superb,it appears quite small but its cavernous inside, great and ornate details including a superb high alter ,its just one amazing looking church,we were in this part of town after Midnight so the church was obviously closed but it still looked amazing,a really grand piece of architecture.
Easy to locate on Franziskanerplatz in an area of outstandingly beautiful architecture and teeming with pubs, bars and restaurants.
Well worth checking out if your in the area.

In the Old Town ... we went for a walk to explore the area and found ourselves by chance inside the Franciscan Church and it was an amazing and unexpected find. The beauty inside this little church rivals any other we have ever visited.

The Church was built in 1603, in a Renaissance style, on the site of a former nunnery. The Church is also called the Church of St Jerome (Heironymus) as it is dedicated to St Jerome (Heironymus) whose reliquary resides in a chapel inside the church. The exterior facade is fairly ordinary being of a grey brick colour with one rose and three pointy windows along with two niches for ornaments being placed above a porch that was subsequently added in a baroque style when the interior was being refurbished. There is a small statue of St Jerome on the peak of the roof of the porch and a small barred window on either side of it. There are also two more pointed windows and some more statues of what appear to be angels on the triangular shaped top of the church.
The church looks onto a small square, which was undergoing significant road works during our visit, where there is a fountain with a bronze statue of Moses.
The interior structure of the church is a single nave with a ribbed vaulted white and gold ceiling. The Baroque interior has an abundance of marble and gold stucco of figures and decorative patterns all over the white walls as well as gilded statues, chapels, and woodwork.
The magnificent High Altar depicting the Virgin Mary in a cloudburst of gold was designed by the Jesuit priest Andrea Pozzo. There are also some beautiful paintings in the Chapels and the carved woodwork on the pews is exquisite. There is a special chapel holding the reliquary of St Jerome.
Apparently the world's oldest organ, 1642, hides behind the High Altar but we could not see it.
There was no entry fee.

This is a very dark church with heavy decoration it makes for quite an oppressive atmosphere and, for me, I didn't particularly like it as a place to find peace and quiet.

Overlooking a small square lies this small church that sits pretty amongst its adjoining residences.
Pretty inside and unassuming out.
