Christmas markets in Vienna are wonderful places to visit, and this is the "King" of Christmas markets. The building is lit up at night, and even outside of the Christmas season, it is a spectacular beauty to behold. Walking around the grounds itself is worth the trip, but you can often wander inside, and catch free concerts for example.

Rathaus is a striking building with a nice space outfront. I was there Christmas week so it was nice to see the Christmas Market and Ice Skating going on too. Apparently, in the summer it has film festivals going on. I'm a bit of an architecture fan and this place didn't disappoint with its Neo-Gothic spires and pointy windows. It's... More

This is an eye-catching, very beautiful Neo-gothic building, build for the city hall of Vienna in late 1800s. It replaced the old city hall. It is a very grand building and overshadows all close-by buildings, like the Burgtheater, the Parliament, the University and so on. It is located on the famous Ringstrasse. In front of the Rathaus is the Rathausplatz... More

Of all the Xmas markets, we preferred the one located here as it just seemed more alive than the others. Architecture of the surrounding buildings is fantastic so worth a look if nothing else.

This is cool place in its own right, but it REALLY gets cool around Christmas. They put a full Christmas market right out front, and it's just awesome. It's a must visit around Christmas, and a visit-if-your-not-super-busy the rest of the year.

Vienna's rathaus is very beautiful, especially in the winter when the Christmas market is open. There is a large ice skating rink.

We were there on December 23rd 2016 and there was a Christmas Market on the grounds. We got there just after Sunset and the lights mounted inside the towers and crevices were turned on. It was just amazing the contrast of the semi lit building against the dark blue skies with some shades of orange. Just a big bonus on... More

while you're wandering around Vienna, pause to get a look at the city hall. Good luck fitting it all into a single picture, it's huge.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
