In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to Delirium Cafe to enjoy some great beers from Belgium and passed through Passauer Platz and dominating this pretty square is Maria Am Gestade ,one of the oldest churches in this most beautiful of city's.
Maria Am Gestade ( St Mary On The Bank or St Mary On The Shore ) is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the city ,it's one of the best known landmarks of the Inner Stadt and is a church much favoured in times gone by by sailors who worked on the River Danube.
Constructed between 1394-1414 ,along with St Ruperts Church and St Peters Church are three of the most beautiful Gothic churches in the city ,unfortunately the church was deconsecrated in 1786 and fell into disrepair to such an extent that during the occupation of Vienna by Napoleons army in 1809 that it was used as an arsenal and stables ,fortunately the church was newly consecrated in 1812 and renovated to leave us with this beautiful church we see today ,I could only take some photos at night ,church was obviously closed before I moved onto Delirium Cafe to warm up and enjoy some beers,Maria Am Gestade is easy to locate on Passauer Platz and is well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning a holiday to Vienna.

The plaque on the exterior of this Gothic church states that it is the oldest church in Vienna dating back to 1137. Other literature I have read agrees that it dates from 1137 but only states that it is one of the oldest. The church has had a chequered history. The present building was built between 1394 and 1414. In 1786 the church was deconsecrated and some elements of it were torn down. Then in 1809, during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna, it was used as an arsenal and a stable. In 1812 it was renovated and reconsecrated. It was further renovated in 1900 and 1930.

The exterior of the church is quite lovely with three ornate porticos, the main with a highly decorated canopy that has a number of sculptures and mosaics. There are a number of statues that adorn the top portion of the front facade as well as a 56 metre high tower adorned with Gothic scrollwork that was built between 1419 and 1428.

Internally the church has a single narrow nave with a ribbed ceiling. The nave is narrower than the choir. The high altar is a mass of carved wood with gilded elements including Jesus on the cross. The stained glass windows in the apse are impressive as is the 1820 wood inlayed pulpit. There is also a couple of lovely paintings.

Worth a quick look if in the neighbourhood but not a must see.

This church located at the top of a set of stairs is close to the Donau Canal outside of the main tourist zone in Vienna. Inside you will find a beautiful altar with amazing stained glass windows. On the outside the bell tower is majestic.

I was several times in Vienna and always this church was closed - so now it was opened. I entered and was surprised when I saw what is inside - obviously it was renovated, but there is no info (inside or outside) in English (only German). The place is really amazing and it enters in my must see list for next visits there. The place is located at the very end of the historical Vienna center and difficult to find without electronic help :) but it pays for the efforts.

This beautiful gothic church is located in the Innere Stadt, not too far from the river, but it is not easy to find it, because it's slightly of the main tourist route. White interior with stained glass windows is really nice. It's worth visiting if you are in area.

One of the oldest Gothic churches in Vienna used to be a religious place for fishermen and sailors, who worked at the Danube river. It was built in 1414 and still looks outstanding.

This white/grey marble church stands on top of stairs and has a charming interior. It is beautifully done, not over done, and the primary white colour provides a cool & calming environment. When you're close, walk in and enjoy the serene interior.

This is the second oldest church in Vienna. Originally built before the 1130s, it is in a beautiful gothic style and its tower is quite unique. It is run by the Redemptorist catholic order.

In a city bristling with some amazing churches your spoilt for choice which one to visit and St Mary's On The Bank is certainly a good starting point.
St Mary's On The Bank ( Sy Mary At The Shore or Maria Am Gestade ) is a beautiful church, a great example of Gothic architecture that is so pleasing on the eye, it's one of the oldest churches in Vienna ,its located in the Innere Stadt and was a particularly favourite church used by sailors who worked on the River Danube.
Built between 1394 and completed in 1414 ,its such a wonderful looking church ,along with St Rupert's Church and St Peter's Church are the best examples of Gothic architecture in Vienna.
The church was deconsecrated in 1786 and fell into disrepair to such an extent that during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna in 1809 it was used as an arsenal and stable but by 1812 the church was newly consecrated and renovated to more or less give us the stunning church we see today.
We were wandering around this part of town taking in the stunning architecture the Innere Stadt offers and although the church was closed on our visit it was so good just admiring the beautiful church.
This church is easy to locate on At Passauer Platz and is most definitely well worth checking out.

I'm not an architecture connoisseur, it's 1st time that I see a Gothic church not with a spire but with such a light lacy openwork bell tower. Especially admirable in the evening in the light snow!
