Went here December 2016 for a long weekend visiting friends who live in Vienna. Went to Schonbrunner for the zoo, the Technology Museum up the road and the Xmas market in the Palace square/gardens. It had snowed the night before so the place was quite beautiful but quite cold/slushy! Would be great to walk around when it's warmer with a... More

We intended to visit the Schonbrunn palace but the length of the queues did not look inviting. We instead spent a few hours walking around the beautiful palace gardens. The gardens are definitely worth a visit on their own, even if you decide to skip the rediculous queue to enter the palace.

Hadn't time to tour the main building, but just looking from outside is pretty impressive. It's a long hike up behind the back of the palace to the cafe but it's irresistable and when you get there the views and the cafe make worthwhile.

The gardens are magnificent. If I have to be honest, this place is so huge, peaceful and beautiful, that I really got envied of the imperial family, that have lived there. (just kidding, a little :) )

After an hour and half touring the palace, I spent an entire day at the gardens. Great for families as well as couples.

Cold and windy when we were there on Christmas. Too cold to even admire the hardscape. Palace is better than Versailles, in my opinion. Visited both places (V and here) during winter so would definitely like to come back when things are green and in bloom!

The day we were here was freezing but so worth the visit. When you visit the Schonbrunn palace the gardens are at the back we spend a lovely afternoon in the middle of winter just wandering around. The entrance to the zoo is also in the gardens which was very enjoyable.

If you have a half of day, you can take a walk to visit the gardens. Go up on the hill to have a beautiful view of the city and of the palace in winter. No fee is required.

Having seen through the palace on a previous visit to Vienna, we couldn't resist another stroll around these majestic gardens. Beautifully designed centuries ago and carefully maintained now, the gardens really are quite exquisite. Not to be missed on a visit to the palace.

We had visit Schonbrun palace during christmas holidays. The weather was very cold and windy so it was difficult for us to walk around the gardens to the GLORIETTE which gave us a nice picture from the palace. During spring and summer time i thing is the best season if you want to make a nice walking tour in the... More

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
