    Schonbrunner Gardens
The gardens are located on 120 hectares of land around Schönbrunn Palace and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opened to visitors in 1779. If you are a lover of aesthetics, then I recommend taking a walk and enjoying all this splendor.

    Immaculate and vast
Definitely a high point. From the perfect gardens to the woods to the Roman ruins and waterfalls all the way up to the galleria. Throw in a maze, the worlds oldest zoo and other little secrets too. Definitely worth a day taking some amazing photos of the palace and the city

5 stars; need to buy a ticket!
I think this is a very beautiful place to visit, particularly if you have the pass. Do not think you can come here without buying a ticket! It is nevertheless worth going to without wanting to spend money. Absolutely beautiful views! I would recommend spending a full day here, too.

    A Must See
You must go. A lot of it is free- some areas are 5 euros to enter, but you can see a lot f it without the extra money. Definitely make sure you see the beautiful rose garden.

    Lovely gardens and building.
It was perfect weather for strolling around the gardens. They’re vast with plenty to see. We didn’t pay to go into the maze, but would have if we had more time. The building is beautiful in itself. The Gloriette was magnificent and could be seen from a long distance away. There was some scaffolding and work being done. The restaurant at the top of the hill was lovely. We had coffee sitting out in the courtyard. In all a great trip and all free to visit.

Easy to spend a few hours exploring the Schönbrunn Gardens
The Schönbrunn Gardens combined with the Palace are a UNESCO World Heritage attraction (1996) that make for a nice place to spend a few hours during visits to Vienna. These grounds were opened to the public in 1779, providing the Viennese population with rural and recreational grounds around the Palace to freely enjoy, much the same for residents and tourists to this day. The gardens extend 1.2 km from east to west and 1 km from north to south and are filled with tree lined pathways, small unique gardens with fountains, statues, sculptures as well as palace buildings that complement visits to the Palace. You'll find public toilets, a couple of cafes and endless places to grab a park bench in open and secluded areas in the sun or under the shade of trees. Plenty to do/see within the Schönbrunn Gardens making it well worth spending time in addition to visits to the Palace itself.

    Magnificent and free to explore
The Palace does have an entry fee but the expansive gardens are free to enter and explore. You will be surprised at how big they are and how much time it takes. We were inside the complex for 4 hours and ended up walking for 8kms which includes the zoo that is inside the ground. Definitely go up to the Gloriette for some brilliant views of the palace and the city. The zoo has two entrances .. one near the fountain at the bottom and the other at the top near the restaurant. Depending on the time, we went up the Gloriette and to the restaurant (Gasthaus Tirolergarten) and after having the most brilliant lunch, we entered the zoo and made our way down. On a lovely day the gardens are a delight to explore. Just keep at least half a day for the same.

    Lovely and peaceful
We spent a wonderful couple of hours wondering around the gardens. The gardens are free. We walked from the zoo to the Gloriette which provides a great view of the palace and city beyond. We stopped off at the Gloriette cafe for a coffee, there was a small queue but we got seated quickly. The decor is nice but if you visit the zoo the Emporer’s Pavillion cafe is far more ornate and grand. The schonbrunn gardens are so peaceful and quiet. A really treat was to see the red squirrels running about in the trees near the Gloriette.

    Perfect Day Out!
The gardens are free to explore with lots to see. It certainly has the wow factor! There is the palace there also for an entrance fee however, we spent all day in and around the gardens. There was a fantastic Easter market on with lots of lovely stalls with food and drink galore and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around it. There were a myriad of beautiful stalls to look at, it was a joy and so vibrant! We did visit the cafe just to the left of the market, it was nice but over priced for me at nearly 8€ for a tiny coffee!

    Beautiful garden
Quickly walked through the gardens and was amazed by the gardens. I sadly wasn't able to see everything, but it was still nice to see. Would love to go back to explore the entire garden one day.

The gardens at the backyard of Schönbrunn are absolutely beautiful. I recommend you to just go to walk to the gardens, they are free of charge. The few gardens (and the maze) where you need to pay to enter are not worth it. The free ones are much more beautiful. Walk up to the Gloriette for an amazing view.

Visited this place on a Sunday the 19th of May 2024 and it was very crowded and the tickets to enter the palace were all sold out so wandered around the gardens. The entry to the gardens from the right side of the palace is free but if one stands in a long queue and pays 5 euros for the entry to the garden from the right side then it’s not worth it ! The train ride however is worth it as it lasts for more than 30 minutes with a guided tour of the gardens and the historic area. About the history of the gardens here : The park at Schönbrunn Palace was opened to the public around 1779 and since then has provided a popular recreational amenity for the Viennese population.

They were planting flowers while we were there. Beautiful gardens, fountains, and greenhouses. You can walk around for hours, which we did while waiting for the palace tour.

There are some bumps and rocks on the paths, but for the most part, the gardens at Schonbrunn are smooth and suitable for all visitors, including people in wheelchairs. Some are steeper than others, especially the paths ascending to the hill/lookout point toward the castle, but still manageable. They are sprawling, well-maintained, and like a maze—you might get lost! Because they are so vast, it actually spreads people out enough so that it doesn’t feel as crowded as if you were inside the palace or in the plaza. The gardens are 100% free of charge, so what’re you waiting for?!

The Schonbrunn gardens are amazing; I visited towards the end of April when the wisteria was unfortunately starting to fade; regardless, the gardens are diverse and very interesting. I didn’t pay to see the specialty gardens - I only paid to visit the palace, maze, and zoo. In my humble opinion, the gardens and zoo are the stars of the show. I went on a Monday and the crowds at the palace were overwhelming. If you are on a budget or stressed for time, I’d skip the palace and just visit the gardens- they are well sign-posted!

Well manicured gardens and flower beds. It looked like bulbs had recently been planted so the bottom half of the gardens lacked flowers.
Really nice and peaceful walk around the edges and up to the gloriette. Most tourists walk straight up the middle path and miss out on the quieter botanical gardens path on the right hand side.

The gardens at Schonbrun are beautiful, and there are many spots tucked away that you can go to spread a blanket and picnic awhile.

Stroll the rose gardens, go by the zoo, see the grand palace - if you choose to go there earlier in the mornings, you’ll avoid the crowds - especially as the weather heads towards lovely summer!
