This church is in the Freyung Square and is not elaborate externally and more subdued than most others internally but still worth a visit if in the area.

This church is less busy than others in the 1 Bezirk. There are fewer tourists coming here (at least in my experience), so if you would like to visit a quiet church with beautiful paintings and altars, this is a place for you.

Schottenkirche is a church on Freyung Square. Austrian composer Haydn’s memorial service was actually held here when he died. Pretty much a celebrity here during his time, Haydn taught Beethovan and was a mentor to Mozart, so you can imagine the pedigree here. You can visit inside the church if mass isn’t going on and it features two massive organs.

We stopped off to visit this lovely church. It is called the Scottish church , it was founded by the Hiberno-Scottish Benedictine monks in the 12th century.

I was quite fortunate to stumble across this church just as the sun came out for the first time for the day, resulting in some great lighting for photos. Unfortunately I wasn't quite so lucky in that a wedding was taking place inside - meaning that it wasn't open for visitors. Very pretty church in baroque style.

This church is located 10 minute walk from Stephansplatz. Its interior has very elaborate ceiling and wall paintings, sculptures and an ornate altar.

I visited this lovely church on April 7th afternoon. It was 6.30pm and there was a mass going on. I wish I had entered earlier to admire its interior to the fullest!

Parts of this Scottish Viennese parish church date back 1000 years. We stumbled upon it and I'm glad we went inside. It's lovely despite looking plain from the outside. Check it out if your are in the area.

Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
