The Neue Burg is the most recent part of the Hofburg Palace on Vienna’s Ringstrasse, and it is home to three collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments comprises the original instruments of some of the world’s greatest composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The Collection of Arms and Armour is packed full of magnificent suits of armour and decora-tive weapons that attest to chivalric values and impor-tant occasions at court. And at the Ephesus Museum the »Parthian Monument« reflects the glory and splendour of one of Antiquity’s greatest cities.

One of many palaces and museums along the ring road, this was of special interest to me because of the Ephesus collection from the ancient Roman city in Turkey. I had visited Ephesus a couple of times (fantastic accessible Roman ruins) and wanted to see what the Austrian archeologists had collected from their excavations there. It was a small but... More

The Museum was centrally located at Heroes' Square and at the exit of Hofburg. The horse statue in front was landmark of the museum which looked great from outside. We hurried our way to other spots and only took a few photos there. It was later learnt that the musical and armors exhibits inside were worth viewing. Hope to view... More

I went to this museum because I bought a comb deal at other museum. If you love instruments or amours this's the place for you.

The Neue Burg is a sizeable museum specialising in musical instruments (mainly piano based) and armour - well set out well spaced out and impressive - sadly all notices and item-related information is in German alone whereas it would have been better and just a little more effort to have provided a much needed English translation. Not many folk in... More

We went there with the intention of looking mainly at all the collection from Ephesus, including the Artemis sculpture. That exhibit is magnificent in and of itself, but on the upper levels, there are exhibits of medieval suits of armor and a fascinating one of the history of musical instruments. Worth dedicating a good couple of hours.

Both the armor and the musical instrument exhibits are comprehensive and informative. The audio guide allows the visitor to appreciate the history represented by the exhibits. The armor area takes one back to the medieval times and the pomp and ceremony of the tournament era. The city of Vienna is the heart of superb music and the instruments presented help... More

As the museum is not open on Mondays, I was expecting all the tour groups and tourists to all be coming the next day, but when my family went to visit the Neue Burg today, we essentially had the Neue Burg museum completely to ourselves (perhaps the cold and rainy weather contributed to this?) and it was AWESOME! The museum... More

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
