After walking around the 1st District (Hofburg, Roman Ruins next to Griensteidl Café, stores & cafes on Graben), take a short break in this church, complete with bones in the crypt. Hearing a visiting choir sing during a concert was lovely!

This one is located right near the entrance to the Hofburg palace and is another massive religious structure. This one is perhaps slightly more in need of renovation than some of the others. Quite dark inside so photos don't turn out that well. The exterior looks a little simpler than some of the other churches. Worth a visit.

Near the Hofburg Palace...this church is one of the oldest churches in Vienna. I didn't have time to visit the crypts below the church but will be sure to do so next time I'm in Vienna.

Magnificent architecture of the church building. Feels serene and peaceful when inside the church. Please maintain complete silence as others are doing their prayers. I admire the high altar with Fall of the angels and the Maria candia icon. Do not forget to look up at the glided pipe organ on the way out of the church

Your guide will probably recommend Imperial crypt, but for moore macabre, visit this one. For the price of 7 euros, you will get an amazing insight into the world of Viennas middle and lower class.

Just a side attraction among the massive number of things to do near Hofburg palace. Free for public. They do organ concerts on Saturdays, would have liked to try it out but schedule did not permit. It's very nice inside, would recommend a visit.

On a plaza flanked by entrances to the famous Spanish Horse Stables and two excellent cafes that you should try is this gem of a church. Well worth a visit. Not as huge as St. Stephens but very pretty (lots of gold and statues) and very tranquil. Doesn't get a crush of tourists but more than a few people praying.

There are so many nice churches in Vienna and each is as impressive as the next. This church has an ornate altar, some grand statues and a majestic organ.

Small, quiet church but lovely ambiance and despite the scaffolding, managed to get a great picture of the statue above the door. This was my favourite church in Vienna and had a very welcoming feel. It's just across from the Hofburg and near the National Library.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
