The baroque world in the State Hall What comes to mind when you think of a library hall? Enter the State Hall of the Austrian National Library and your expectations are guaranteed to be exceeded. Feel the essence of history. The State Hall – built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library – is a breathtaking 80 metres long and 20 metres high. An intricately decorated dome and numerous frescos provide an imperial flair. This baroque jewel is home to over 200,000 tomes. Four magnificent Venetian globes, each with a diameter of over one metre, provide the finishing touch to the heart of the Austrian National Library.

In the corner of Josfplatz, not easy to spot but well worth the effort!! Stunning surroundings everywhere you look. You can only imagine the items that are in here -- original handwritten musical scores, handwritten books, globes, the list goes on. And the sheer volume...More

Just breath taking interior and all the books! Also exhibition is very interesting. It's like in old movies, or in Harry Potter or in GOT. We really liked it a lot!

The library entry isn't the most visible, it's in the square right beside a Church. You pay for tickets (6 euros), with a Vienna pass you get in for free but still need to get your card scanned and stand in line. This isn't a...More

One of our favourite attractions in Vienna. The building is beautiful, and there was an exhibition on the library's history, with treasures not normally on view being displayed

Did not do this on a previous trip so was very keen to do it this time. Although it is only one room, what a room. Fabulous interior from a time of imperial greatness.

This library is unbelievable. It is very ornate and colorful. It is worth the time to go through this. Would love to sit and read some books in this setting.

The national library is absolutely beautiful. Any tourist needs to visit the library and take a few snaps of the books and paintings on the ceiling. Although be careful not to use flash photography as it might damage the old books. The guards are very...More

Well worth a visit. And being a library, there's this unspoken agreement among the visitors that no one should speak, so it's nice and quiet. And pretty incredible. Well worth a quick look.

I agree with Mike N, an hour at the library should be enough. In December the library placed illuminated manuscripts, illustrated with pictures related to Jesus's birth, in display cases. Be sure to find time for the... More

Yes, you can take photos, but strictly no flash allowed. They have a couple of monitors walking around making sure that no one uses flash or gets too close to the books.
