Neighbourhood: Wieden
The fourth district combines elegant tradition with contemporary style and relaxed living. More than a dozen town palaces and churches such as St. Charles Borromeo have added glamour to a neighbourhood known for its traditional retail and crafts shops, taverns, cafés. Wieden is also home to Naschmarkt, Vienna’s largest street market. Many bohemian types have found their way to Wieden: meet them in trendy cafés and bars, shop alongside them for vintage items, enjoy Wien Museum’s and Kunsthalle’s modern temporary exhibitions, and hang out with the bees at Vienna’s most beautiful urban garden, Karlsgarten.

- Mhowell007Chester Springs, Pennsylvania18 contributionsBaroque masterpieceBeats the pants off the other churches in Vienna. No other more polite way to say it. Just beautiful inside and out. See it at night if you can as well. Stephansdom was well worth seeing too, don’t get me wrong. But if I had to pick one and only one, Karlskirche would win hands down.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 15 December 2022
- Gareth P222 contributionsKarls Kirche fabulous inside and outBeautiful church with great presence, overlooking a fabulous crafty Christmas market (in December). Don’t hesitate to spend the minimal fee to go in, it’s worth it for the ornamentation, the ambiance, the organ balcony and the views from the panoramic observation deck. My favourite church in Vienna.Visited December 2022Written 18 December 2022
- Suzanne HClayton, California69 contributionsStunning Baroque church. Sit and absorb its quiet beautyWell worth a visit. Easily accessible from Karlsplatz: a central transportation hub. Entry is cash only though. If you fancy a climb up the stone spiral staircase you can get to the organ overlooking the church. Next level is a display of clerical vestments as well as a model of the church. Then climb to the top for a panoramic view of Vienna and the belfry. I went up at midday and enjoyed the pealing of the noon bells.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 January 2023
- MarkW55Castle Douglas, United Kingdom476 contributionsLovely churchThis is a great baroque church situated just outside 'the ring' but very easily accessible via the city's excellent tram and bus system. It can be visited by paying an admission charge but we attended a Sunday mass service and there is no charge to enter. The church's interior is well worth viewing and there is access to internal and external viewing balconies for those who buy a ticket.Visited January 2023Written 1 February 2023
- Neil KLiverpool, United Kingdom6,18,649 contributionsStunning backdrop to the Christmas marketMy twin brother Stephen and I were in Vienna for the run up to Christmas and we visited all of the many Christmas markets endemic throughout the city over the festive period ,one we loved was Karlsplatz Christmas Market ,lots of beautifully decorated stalls and very popular ,great setting in the park with the magnificent Karlskirche as a stunning backdrop. Karlskirche ( Rektoratskirche St Karl Borromaus ) is a beautiful Baroque church and is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in the city ,constructed between 1716-1737 and dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, the most outstanding feature of this church is the magnificent dome ,looks amazing ,it's such a photogenic church and adds to the joy of visiting Karlsplatz. Well worth seeking out if you're planning a holiday to Vienna.Visited December 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 3 February 2023
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,760 contributionsFees and rude staff unbecoming to a place of worship! We love visiting churches and Karlskirche looked very intriguing from the outside, with its huge dome and the two massive columns (patterned after Trajan's Column in Rome. But, we were more than turned off by the ridiculous 9.50 euros charge to enter and the rude "guard" at the entrance enforcing he collection of fees. Really a turn-off when churches feel compelled to charge people to enter a house of worship. As if the Catholic Church is hard up for money!Visited November 2022Written 20 February 2023

The church really emphasised the music and was a great venue. Wouldn't pay to just see the church alone though as not really my thing.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 May 2023
- ssstevegHaifa, Israel1,738 contributionsGreat concert in a beautiful church! We went to 2 concerts during our recent visit to Vienna. One of them was at Karlskirche (St. Charles' Church), a beautiful baroque church, and it's beautiful both inside and out. There is a standard concert played here about 3 times a week, featuring Vivaldi's 4 seasons, and usually another unrelated work or 2. Even though this is a tourist-oriented concert, run on a regular basis, the concert was absolutely fantastic. The first violinist was exceptional. I did my best to identify him, but I couldn't find his name anywhere. All in all - a beautiful venue, and a fantastic concert!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 July 2023
- kcartersPeterborough, United Kingdom259 contributionsVìvaldi four seasonsThis is a hidden gem and definitely needs to be seen to be believed. Weirdly it doesn’t seem to have much love locally! The place inside is insanely beautiful. The exterior is like Taj Mahal with the pond and reflection (but then they drained it when I was there for a film festival!) We saw Vivaldi opera here. Vivaldi may be buried in the grounds but (again) no mention or monument. This place is amazing but no one seems to be that fussed! Opera was superb and so atmospheric too!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2023

The musicians performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons were very good. The problem is the acoustics of the church are terrible for a string ensable and the sound was really terrible, we could not make out the instruments clealy and it totally spoiled this wonderful music. We had good seats within the front third of the church. I will be requesting a refund. My strong advice is, unless the music is properly amplified with a good sound system, do not attend this venue

Beautiful outside views both during the day and at night, reflecting pool. Inside fee to enter seemed excessive to me, elevator no longer present so stairs only access to upper floors. Views of skyline outside not great. A lovely church not sure with admission.

First impression- bored staff showing no interest and reading their own books or on their phones. Very expensive and no different to churches visited for free. Just felt dead. On the other hand at Stephen’s was great. Wish hadn’t wasted the money

This is a beautiful church. I did not go inside, as it costs money, but I wholeheartedly recommend detouring your trip to at least look at Karlskirche.

I visited the church in August on a hot summer day. Just the area itsself is really pretty. There are a bunch of benches and a fountain in front of the church and a drink stand. Just sitting there an enjoying the view of the church is worthwhile. I went inside the church too and the inside is pretty too. Ive read comments that the entry is expensive but actually I think it basically is regular tourist attraction prices (which are all not exactly cheap). With the entrance to the church its included to go to the roof and different floors with small exhibits.

Where the metro U1 and U4 meet is this fine church. Not as ornate as its more grand cousins in Vienna, this church reflects a brighter ambience - a place of hope. For the hearty there is a 100 step climb to the cupola, giving you a good view of the city, a look at some of the Church's treasures and organ loft. There is no loo, but the local technical college to the left of the main entrance, are welcoming for the desperate. The night lift in front of the church is vibrant in the summer. A very pleasant place to "hang out."

By the way, the interior of the church is not particularly special. Inside, it resembles any other church. The exterior, however, is more impressive. There are many other churches you can visit for free in Vienna. Dave your 9,50€. For what you get it should be free!
Yesterday, I visited the interior of St. Charles Church in Vienna for the first time since I've been living here. Once inside, I noticed one of those coin printing machines found in many cities that create pretty souvenirs. I collect them, but I only had a 5€ note and no 1€ coin. So I returned to the ticket office and asked the lady if she could exchange the money, clearly stating that I wanted to get a souvenir. Annoyed and indifferent, she grumbled, "Nein, das geht nicht!" I asked once more, but she refused to listen. It was just a 5€ note, not 50 or 100! She had enough change. What's wrong with these people? We were even in a church! The money I needed would have gone to the church's funds. I might have even used them for donation boxes.
I understand rules are important to these people, but for heaven's sake, they should show some humanity once in a while! There's a lack of empathy. They seem like empty bodies without souls. Incidents like this occur frequently to locals and especially tourists. I feel relieved that I'll be leaving soon. I don't want to spend another year where all of this is considered normal. I dislike this country!

I'm not sure but it's very easy to get it directly at the entrance. You also get a discount by showing your Vienna City Card (if you got one).

I visited a concert in this church. The concert ticket was enough to enter the church. The concert was at late evening and I think the elevator didn't work at that time.
