My wife and I have visited the Graben/Kohlmarkt a couple of times when in Vienna. At Christmas time, the night time decorations are stunning. At other times, it's just a great place to window shop (our budget doesn't permit actually going INTO places like Hermes or Cartier!). People watching is also fun, pick up a gelato and stroll. Avoid the... More

Part of the wonderful walking area of Vienna. Beautiful shops, coffee shops and so safe and clean. Begins at the Cathederal.

Graben and Kohlmarkt pedestrians include gorgeous buildings around that host some of the most expensive boutiques in Vienna like Chanel, Burberry, Dior, Armani and Prada, but also some of the finest places for coffee and patisseries like the historic Demel, a must visit place for a sweet and coffee. Beware that in Vienna it is quite difficult to find a... More

The Graben and the Kohlmarkt are known as Vienna's most elegant shopping streets. All the famous brand names are represented here: Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Chanel, and Armani and others.. Peterskirche, the oldest church in Vienna and Pestsäule, Memorial monument, are placed on Graben. Graben street is also very nice place for festivals and celebrations.. we were here on 31th.... The 'Graben' has become a very crowded shopping place in Vienna with a lot of historic buildings. If you visit Vienna, you have to come here. Years ago, we enjoyed here the 'Schrammelmusik' and people were walsing spontaneous in the street. Unfortunately, this charming habitude has disappeared or was I at the wrong moment here?

A very pretty street with some interesting shops and some really beautiful buildings around. Not much more though.

Kohlmarkt is an interesting street for its shops and especially Demel bakery, a favorite of Empress Sissi. The majority of the shops are luxurious brands, and souvenirs shops are way to expensive for what they offer.

I always find myself wandering here, it is kind of the spiritual heart of the city, with the moving statue to mark the end of the plague.

Lovely place to stroll and people watch. Apart from H andM the shops are out of reach to mere mortals, but it is nice to look.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
