In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

This is a beautiful area with some lovely buildings and, in December, some magnificent Christmas street lighting and decorations.

We walked past here on several occasions during the daytime and in the evening and enjoyed looking at the small, but very good, Christmas markets and lights.

Walked by it the first time, little indication of the beauty inside. Unlike St. Peter's.and St. Stephen's down the street this church was empty and quiet. Beautifully decorated and open to wander. A must see!

Very nice Christmas Market with lots of food vendors and crafts. Just enough variety and plenty of standing tables to eat and drink. You can cover it leisurely in about 30 minutes. There is another Market about a block away.

We come to Vienna every year or so, usually in late November. A few years back we stumbled on our first Christmas market (various squares around the city have them, each with food and punch stands as well as stalls selling a variety of wares). This year, we stopped at this market sponsored by Radio Vienna. It took us a little bit of time to figure out how to get here from the nearest U-bahn station (Herrengasse), but eventually just followed people down a pedestrian alleyway that got us here.

Being early on a sunny Saturday afternoon, our first priority was getting some lunch - we got some sausage cooked to order and from another stand some käsespätzle. The sausage was pretty good, but the spätzle was a little on the bland side (could have used some more onion). We washed it all down with some orange punch (our usual flavor, but we hear that this market offers a Swiss pine punch that is also very good). Of course, we always keep the cup which is uniquely decorated for the particular market and dated (although sometimes you'll get a "vintage" cup leftover from a previous year).

After lunch, we strolled around looking at the clothes and handicrafts available from the various stalls and, of course, did some people watching (one of our favorite activities). Overall, we probably spent an hour or so here - a fun and little different way to see the locals having a good time.

I was here at Easter Week, and the Easter Market was really nice. There were tons of decorated eggs, mostly real eggshells, with so many different designs and paintings on them. There were also many craft booths with a big variety of items for sale, but mostly very nice booths and not as much junk as some places might have.

It is a square, not much more. It is surrounded by quite nice buildings though and its own design is rather pleasant, so stop by and enjoy it when going through the Old Town.

This square comes alive late November through December with the Weihnachtsmarkt Am Hof (advent Christmas market). It has a variety of stalls, handmade arts & crafts, Christmas gifts & souvenirs, decorations & of course local foods on offer. It's within walking distance of Graben st, St Stephen's cathedral, Hofburg palace & the larger Freyung Christmas market. Why not spend a few hours wandering the streets looking at the Christmas decorations, visiting the markets & tasting the local cuisine.

The best time to visit this square is on a Saturday when there is a bustling antiques market with lots of quirky objects to browse. On the day we visited there was also a farmers market at nearby Freyung. From late November both these venues become Christmas markets.
