It's not too fantastic !

The whole area to me was rather disappointing in that there wasn't a great deal to see and do and there was nobody about other than perhaps the occasional cyclist. I wanted to have a close up of the Danube which I got but won't be rushing back too quickly. It's all a bit too concretey .... though it is... More

Went by U Bahn and bus (92A) to this 21 km long island in the Danube River. There was a swimming festival going on, with music etc. too. The bottom end of the island is an FKK area (nudist) and clothes are optional here. It is peaceful and clean and different. You can reach it by bridges from the main... More

Exit the underground at 'Donauinsel'. For swimming the east side is better than the wide Danube river itself. For orientation: East of 'Wasserspielplatz' on google maps. Bring plenty of food and drink as there are hardly any or no places to buy something. Also great place for inline skating as the paths are nice&smooth.

We went to the Donauinsel in search of a place to swim and cool off. That is just what we found! It was great to be in the free, without expensive tourist attractions. It was just a natural place to chill in the sun and take a dip in the river. We stayed there most of the day until the... More

If you have a few days to spend in Vienna and you already did all your shopping you can go on Donau insel, Sunday is perfect because almost everything in the city is closed. You can rent bikes if you don"t have yours or you can roller blade. The lanes are perfect, you don't even feel that you are skating.... More

Introduced to this magical place by our two Austrian friends , we visited the three floating bars to quench a very hot Austrian summer , the last one on the right was very expensive , so give this one a miss , its the one closest to the bridge ! . as the night wore on we decided to hire... More

We had bikes from CityBike (the Stadt has several stations all over Vienna - it is somewhat complex however to get the bikes if you are more than one person - pls read my review on CityBike separately). The Insel is long - more than 20 km, but very narrow, so in many places you see both sides of the... More

Great walk to view this lighthouse on the Donau, nice large open garden area and plenty of places to sit and look at the view

This is an oasis amidst a major metropolis. It's park-like, with walkers, cyclists, sunbathers, and people at picnic. The river along the Donauinsel is clean, with swans swimming in it. With such an enticing environment, I took a swim and totally enjoyed it, very refreshing (see pic). They actually hold open-water competitions in the same water. There are places where... More

In preparation for a marathon, I needed to do a 29km run while in Vienna. This is a great spot to get away from the city and stretch your legs. I ran north from the centre. Watch for bikes who also like to use the unimpeded stretches to race the paths, especially the centre path. There are also toilets and... More

Staying in Leopoldstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
Leopoldstadt
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.
