Having the Vienna Pass meant we felt able just to dip in and out of the somewhat overwhelming collection of art and sculpture as well as Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities. The building itself is all marble columns and statuary with gilded murals (some above the impressive marble staircase by Gustav Klimt). At the top of the staircase is a... More

I try to visit this museum each time I am in Vienna. The wonderful collection of art housed here is magnificent, but the building itself is also a work of art. Just walking up the main stairway is an awe-inspiring experience. How sad, I have often thought, that so many people pass by this great house of art and never... More

Impressive from the outside, jaw dropping from the inside! On entering - on the left and down are lockers that we recommend you leave all unnecessary coats and bags etc - they take a 1 or 2 Euro coin to release the key which can be collected when you leave. If taking the Audio Guides allow 3-4 hours to do... More

Located in the historic centre this is a superb gallery that includes extraordinary collections of Egyptian, Greek, Roman antiquities, stunning art collection as well as temporary exhibitions. Impressive scale and somewhat overwhelming at times in terms of grandeur and splendour. It seemed to have one of the most popular coffee rooms in Vienna. Although I could not get a seat... More

The cafe is good for a snack or lunch. Rubens maybe 20 plus, Vermeer 'Allegory of Art' is worth the trip alone

Superb collection of art and artefacts through the ages housed in an elegant 1890s building. Allow at least 3 hours to see everything.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
