The Cultural World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Palace is Austria's most frequently visited tourist attraction. In the palace the residential and state rooms with their original furnishings and decorations convey an authentic impression of the imperial lifestyle. The park and gardens surrounding the palace make Schönbrunn in a unique synthesis of Baroque art as well as providing a convenient and highly popular recreational area for Vienna's population.

Schoenbrunn Palace is absolutely gorgeous. It was decorated for Christmas on the outside which made it even more beautiful. The date we went was a holiday for Austrians so it was very crowded but that did not take anything away from the sites. The rooms were amazing. The gold leaf decorations were everywhere and the chandeliers were breathtaking. I have... More

Visited late afternoon as it was getting dark and all the Christmas Market lights were twinkling. The Palace provided a fantastic backdrop to all of this.

The castle was tasteful compared to many other palaces. Minus was that you are not allowed to take pics inside. Its super popular site and always crowded therefore we booked a ticket for the next day cos we didnt want to wait for 2 hours to get in. If u decide to wait have a stroll in the garden. The... More

This place is busy even in winter. There's a Christmas market during advent as well. Worth the visit here.

I took the grand tour and I loved it, the palace is beautiful and the history is very interesting, the audioguide are great, so each one is independent moving around, no need to stick in a group. Definitely worth.

We walked from the zoo to the Schoenbrunn Palace. It is spectacular to look at and we got some lovely pictures from the outside. I must admit that we didn't go inside as it isn't an area of put interest, but we did visit the Christmas markets there. They had singers and lots of stands with lovely gifts. It was... More

This is like a time warp - giving you the opportunity to live in opulence for 2 hours - whilst experiencing the most beautiful artwork, golden rooms, beautifully manicured gardens and the lives of royalty !

Incredible palace, the size is overwhelming. We attended during Christmas Market, which added to the spectacle. The facility is very well organized. You go to a welcome center, which has an information desk and ticket purchase through either automated kiosks or through agents at a desk. There is also a cafe at the welcome center. Good coffee. It was busy... More

Enjoyed their Christmas Market. We think it had some of the most unique items crafted by individuals that we had seen. It is a ways out their. We were on the Hop On / Hop Off bus and hoped off for an hour or so. Look like it would be enjoyable in warmer weather!

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
