The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Don't buy from VIANNA CONCERT. Buy direct.
Nov 2021
If you want to go to the Opera do not be mislead by buying through VIENNA CONCERT a.k.a. RM Europa ticket. These are ticket toputs who will not give you a full refund if gthe Opera House cancels. Rip-off artists masquerading as genuine representatives.
Buty only direct from the State Opera.

So interesting
Nov 2021 • Couples
We looked on line to check when we could do the tour of the Opera House. We queued for about half an hour and then we bought tickets and joined a group. There are tours in several languages. The tour was about 35 minutes long with an excellent guide. At the beginning the acoustics made it difficult to hear but as we moved around the building it was fine. It was interesting hearing how the operation works and how the building was rebuilt after being destroyed during WW2. Worth seeing.

Terrific Experience
Nov 2021
We attended Carmen earlier this month and enjoyed the performance and the opera house. There really isn't a bad seat; that said, avoid the upper balconies to the extent possible.

When you're sent away at the beginning...
Oct 2021
I took the tour at 14h, but ticket offices open at roughly 13h45. If you see a long queue standing in front of the opera, don't be alarmed - these are people waiting in line to get a ticket. The organisation is kind of chaotic, especially with the new Covid measures where you need to prove that you're vaccinated. This was not clear for me, although it was displayed at the entrance. Only problem was that there was a gigantic queue before it blocking the announcement...

The tour itself was magnificent with a funny and knowledgeable guide. We started in the intermission room, but were promptly sent away because high-society guests who don't want to mingle with commoners were invited in this room. Not really polite, especially when you have payed a sum of money for a tour. AS said, the rest of the tour was magnificent, but the organisation needs to be improved as well as their manners...

The opera house is beautiful. The orchrastra was amazing. The actual singing was splendid. However, the modern adaptation was horrid. Painful to watch a treasured art slaughtered. I ultimately clised my eyes and just listened to make it through the opera with a smile. There should honestly be a warning of a modern adaptation. Also, all the social media, newspaper headlines etc should be translated on the small screen. Not everyone speaks German.

Wonderful Visit
Jun 2021
A beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. The tour was fun, though the initial climb up the nearly 300 or more steps to the roof was a bit much. Great view of the street below though. After the climb, the tour explored the highlights of the venue, including the Grand Staircase. Tea Salon, Marble Hall, Schwind Foyer, Gustav Mahler Hall. My favorite room was Emperor Franz Joseph’s Tea Room.

Overall, a nice tour for the price.

A must
Feb 2021
This is a life time experience that we ought it to ourselves and visiting Vienna this is a must stop. Although I am not a great Opera fan, I’ve been watching plays in the past and I was impressed. View of the stage and sound is perfect, every hi-fi aficionado will appreciate the Opera’s architecture. Hoping that the COVID-19 pandemic will decrease and we will be able to attend future plays in this magnificent place.

a must do
Sep 2020
I guess this is something you should do when in Vienna, even if you are not an opera fan. Probably best to pre-book, but otherwise you can try your luck with the ticket re-sellers outside the venue (like we did). Try and get a balcony seat if you can, but your view may be interrupted if not sitting in the front row of the balcony.
