In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Just a few blocks away from the better known Kunsthistoriches Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts has a wonderful art gallery which is open to the public. I came for Hieronymus Bosch's "The Last Judgment" and was pleasantly surprised to find a number of other old master paintings. The current exhibit "History Tales: Fact and Fiction in History Painting" is well worth a visit.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is located at Schillerplatz. The institution has a history that dates back to 1688 as well as a collection of works by Old Masters that can be viewed in the upstairs Painting Gallery. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Mondays). There are also special exhibitions held here that you can research and learn about on the Academy website.

The Gemaldgalerie (Painting Gallery) Is well curated and makes for a good 60-90 art viewing experience. Masterpeices by the likes of Tizian, Pieter de Houch, Rubens and Cranach are on display along with the extraordinary triptych "The Last Judgment" by Hieronymus Bosch. This is the highlight of the Painting Gallery collection and a remarkable painting worth making time to see if you enjoy Bosch works.

A lesser known gallery in Vienna. Tucked away on the second floor of the Academy of Fine Arts.

A small collection, but one of them is the “Last Judgement” by Bosch. A masterpiece!

Very good collection with some special gems (Rembrandt, Botticelli) and many high quality old masters. I especially appreciated the mixture of old and contemporary artwork. Certainly worth a visit.

Wish I knew this BEFORE I walked a half an hour in the freezing cold !!! Apparently the paintings of note are relocated in the Theater Museum- Would have been nice if there was a sign outside the museum that mentioned this! I walked around the building twice before giving up to the elements. My review is based on previous for the collection by others. Not sure how I feel about buying a ticket to a museum I have no interest in just to see the Bosch.

Obviously this is not the Art History Museum, but it still has some very nice and interesting paintings including some real gems. Not a must see, but if you have the time it is certainly worth a visit.

Im not sure what I was expecting with a visit to the Academy of Fine Arts. The paintings (perhaps only some of them?) have been moved while the Academy is being renovated. The collection now on show at the Theater Museum include the Bosch Last Judgment. This alone is worth the visit but the others in the collection are equally good. Sad that we may have seen more if the Academy had been open.

The Picture Gallery (Gemälde galerie) of the Academy of Fine Arts is one of the important collections of Old Masters in Vienna. Unfortunately the gallery is presently closed for restorations.

At this time the collection highlights, including the important Last Judgment triptych by Hironymus Bosch as well as works by the likes of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyke have been temporarily moved to the Austrian Theater Museum at Lobkowitzplatz where they can be viewed until the reopening of the Academy of Fine Arts picture gallery.

Austrian Theatre Museum opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Tuesday). Entrance to view the Academy of Fine Arts masterpieces is €12 per adult.
