We loved this zoo; but it can get busy with groups of kids; so give yourself plenty of time because there's lots to see. Highlights: Pandas and cubs;an outstanding experience, Koala , Polar Bears, and tigers we got some great close up experiences Negatives : the map does not have an animal list. We never did find the otters. Giraffes... More

Wonderful buildings, fantastic surroundings, features and where the animals are cared for in an environment of conservation and education. It was the first time I had seen a panda, they were not as lively as I had hoped, but I saw them- larger than I had imagined. The koala bears were smaller than I thought they would be. The high... Had a wonderful time with family. Lovely place. You can spend at least 6 hours and have a snack or lunch in the restaurants. My daughter loved it.

Small enclosures - but most with a fair attempt to make something interesting for the animals... but the elephant and primate enclosures worried me

The zoo is nice, large and one of the first in Europe. We visited it in a hot day, many animals were hiding from the sun.

This zoo is one of the best we have visited in the countries that we have visited. The animals are in spacious enclosures and the whole place is just very clean. They have panda bears and polar bears and these were our favourite animals from the day. We got a ticket that included a few more attractions around Vienna but... More

The visit to the zoo was an after-thought, but it was the last day of our holiday at Austria and we wanted to take the kids someplace of their choice. And it was worth it. Besides the tiger, lion, polar bear, wolf, sea-lion, giraffe, zebra, panda, leopard , the kids were mighty excited with seeing an anaconda (and a cobra... More

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
