    The place to be!
We visited twice in 2021 and 2022, with 2 kids (5-9). The atmosphere of the Zoo is royal, as it was an "Animal garden" for the royal family. The highlight is of course the Koalas and the Pandas. They are just adorable! We found new friends in the Zoo - two Hyppos! They are sooo cute, they swim in an inside room, and you can observe them for hours.

    An amazing zoo to visit!
An unbelievable experience at Schönbrunn Zoo, when visiting Vienna. And a must-have on your travel itinerary! A to Z of animals to see, from every continent around the world and of course, being one of 27 worldwide zoos to have the giant panda as an attraction. A true wonderous privilege to see in person!

What a place pandas, polar bears, penguins, lions, tigers and much much more. One of the best zoos I’ve been too. Very busy but didn’t affect seeing everything we wanted too

Pandas, polar bears, and a farm cat!
You get a lot for your money at this zoo! Phenomenal! It’s easy to get to from the tram stops, and lots of buildings to explore and lots of walking! We had lunch at the restaurant in the middle of the zoo (the quick serve kiosks were all so busy) and they were clearly struggling with numbers. The food was delicious though. Highlights were definitely the pandas and polar bears, but everything was amazing! The only downside was how busy it was - people don’t seem to recognise personal space anymore but was quite frustrating

gorgeous zoo, very spacious ( for the animals)
Fantastic zoo! I dont like zoos because of the small enclosure, but this place was amazing. some animals we didn't see because they were hiding, I saw one fluffy leopard paw, but this is also a good thing, it means they really do have lots of space. nice place, recommend it a lot.

    Oldest zoo in the world
Loved our walk around the zoo with some amazing big hitters including pandas, hippos, rhinos and a polar bear seen in quick succession. I’ve given it 4 stars as the place is not easy to get around. I saw a guy in a wheelchair struggling to get up the hill to the farm they have. It’s also got a lot of repair work always going on.

    The best zoo
Excellent zoo, actually one of the best I have ever been to, many animals which you can see from good angles and very close. Also there is fresh water available for guests so we could enjoy our experience without dehydration. Also I love you dont have to climb up to the hills and all is in one flat place. Very nice zoo.

    Zoo visitors
My husband and his son had visited the zoo a long time ago when they were living in Vienna. So the memory lane was great. He was able to say that many of the enclosures had changed a lot for the better during the 15+ years. Me and our little person enjoyed the zoo a lot. The place was clean and it seemed that the animal welfare was taken into account. Would recommend.

    Best zoo ever!
This is without doubt the best zoo we have ever visited. Set within a huge park, it is simply gorgeous and if you go in Autumn the colours of the leaves are amazing. Such an amazing range of animals, many we do not have in UK!

An expansive zoo located inside the equally expansive gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace. Tickets are not really cheap but the zoo has an amazing collection of animals for the children to explore.

I just wish they had a one way trail around the place as we seemed to be repeating circuits in order to see the animals.

We easily spent more than an hour inside the zoo. But it was the last thing we did before we exited the palace. It was a shame that many of the food kiosks inside were closed and it was lucky that we had our lunch in the restaurant at the top of the zoo and made our way inside from there rather than from the entrance near the fountain.

The animal enclosures are tiny, the animals looked miserable. I was depressed being there. The zoo needs to treat its animals better. If this is the best zoo in Europe I’d hate to imagine what the others look like.

Poor poor animals 😭 it was also January 2024 and most animals were freezing cold and hiding. Wasn’t much to see. I just want to save them all from their tiny homes. The Hippos and Rhinos were in minuscule enclosures and the polar bears looked suicidal.

Also saw a Humboldt (Peruvian) Penguin that had bleeding flippers/wings, and blood all over the enclosure floor. But there weren’t even any zoo staff around for me to notify them. Most cafes were closed.

Just sooooo sad 😢 Vienna Zoo needs to take notes from Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. They know how to treat animals humanely with enough space and CLEAN enclosures.

The algae and water in all the enclosures were green and disgusting. Not the normal standards. The capybara enclosure water hole was literally full of their poop. It hasn’t been cleaned in days. The whole place just looks neglected.

Someone needs to step up and maintain the zoo properly not just during high season (in summer), but also during low seasons like winter, becoz the animals don’t care about revenue or profits. They deserve clean and comfortable enclosure year round!!

It was definitely the last time I visited a zoo. The sense I got of seeing all these animals being depressed was so strong! Most of theme were sleeping,(!!!) being prisoned in some limited meters, in an environment that has no relation with their natural one. So sorry..

Historic zoo but with fascinating contemporary feel. Information exceptionally well laid out with the chance to engage with world issues, climate problems and conservation of both animals and endangered human cultures. Large animals well housed with appropriate viewing areas. One of the best zoos worldwide and something for all ages.
Not too crowded in the winter months - except the cafe. Well worth spending part of your Schoenbrunn day out at the TierGarten.

I stop by the Schoenbrun zoo every time I visit Vienna. I like the obvious care about the animals, with every effort made to make them comfortable in what is an increasingly quaint way of animal display; professionalism and spaciousness.

The oldest zoo in the world, and (to us) one of the best (we've been to a fair few!)

Nicely laid out, with both indoor and outside areas for all the animals.

Vast range of animals, then (of course) there are the pandas !

A must visit place in Vienna.

LOVED the Vienna zoo!! Easily one of the best zoos we’ve ever been to. Was so worth the visit after looking for something to do one afternoon. Amazing collection of animals in very animal friendly surroundings.

I’m not a big proponent for zoos, but this one is definitely is about as good as it gets. Huge area you will need almost whole day if you want to see everything - we arrived at about 13.00 and were there until closing time and still missed the Palm house. Lots of animals, birds plants, big housing areas. Definitely worth a visit as a separate trip from Schönbrunn palace. You just won’t have enough time if you’d like to do it in one day.
