We visited the zoo after wandering around the gardens of the schonbrunn palace and for such a small space it is excellent. Our trip was made even better as they also currently have 6-month old twin giant pandas who are being looked after by their mother. All the animals were active and seemed happy especially the polar bears! Well worth... More

The Zoo is rather large and the passenger ways are nice decorated and the routes are pleasant to walk trough. Especially the route through the wood and above "in the trees".

Well in February we were surprised to find it open but the animals are still there in the cold! The zoo was large with a lot of different types of animals all looking in good condition with lots of information about animal welfare. Their main exhibition the Panda was a little sleepy but was great to see the lions, tigers,... More

Having been to zoos before where animals are kept in small and unsuitable spaces and exhibiting unnatural behaviours, I found that this zoo seemed to cater for the animals much better. There was a whole range of different animals and I suppose the star of the show had to be the giant pandas and the polar bears. There weren't as... More

Booked this excursion through Expedia (as this is who we booked the holiday through) and thought the whole place was amazing! Not only do you get to walk through the amazing gardens of the Schonnbrunn palace but you also have the experience of the zoo. The variety of animals was amazing and everyone was magnetised to the Giant panda exhibition!... More

The Zoo of Vienna is a place we go on a regular basis, with or without the kids. It's not the biggest one but the oldest one. Excellent place to watch and relax, and next door of Schoenbrunn palace (10 min walking through the park). The pandas are obviously famous but my preferred area is the tropical greenhouse ;-) bars... Tiergarten Schoenbrunn is an old zoo with many historic buildings but all the places for the animals have been modernized so that they resemble their natural habitats. Schoenbrunn Palace is just round the corner.

Fabulous trip at the zoo. You need to plan for a full day to see everything at the zoo. Easily accessible by train or bus and parking if traveling by car. Plenty of eateries that are very reasonably priced. Great array of animals with plenty of space for them and also a petting zoo

I was not expecting much, since on the map I received at Schoenbrunn entrance, the Zoo looked quite small. When I entered I saw the opposite, the Zoo is very large. Since we visited it in February, most of the animals were indoors or sleeping. However, the ZOO was still awesome. You can watch bears swimming, you can go into... More

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
