Having read The Hare with the Amber eyes I wanted to see the Palais Ephrussi.

I was so pleased we were in a hotel opposite with only the Votiv church and park in between. Not able to go inside but had coffee in Mc Donalds next door! It was quite moving knowing some of the history of this once home of Ignace and Emmy Ephrussi and their 4 children.

If you have not read the Hare with the Amber Eyes, then I recommend reading it to learn of one family's long ascent and tragic fall during the German invasion of Vienna.

If you have read the book, visiting Palais Ephrussi transports you back to the memoir's most dramatic moments.

The entrance is a wooden double-door around the corner from the plaque. When I visited, the lobby was open to the public and I was welcomed inside. You'll be able to stand in the central atrium and see the floors rising up to the glass ceiling. There did not appear to be any tours, from what I could tell.

Definitely worth a few extra minutes on your visit to Vienna.

Fascinating old palace on the Ringstrasse. How strange to stand outside this vast building and realise it was once a family home packed with such history, and such tragedy.

Couldn't find the entrance

I was intrigued the tragic history of this building but could not see the entrance. I probably passed it a few times in the extreme heat. The exterior was impressive but I felt that I really missed something meaningful.

A beautiful Building

Whoever read the wonderful book "The Hare with the Amber Eye" should go to see the building that started it all.
This wonderful story comes to life when you enter the building, see its grandeur, and let your imagination recall this fantastic tail of a Jewish family that started in Odessa as Kings of Wheat, and disappeared almost without a trace until Edmund De Vaal wrote its history. Yona S.

If you have read The Hare with the Amber Eyes, this is a must visit. Take the walking tour to get a rich sense of this site and its history. The guide will highlight the Palais, the gymnasium, the University where the Ephrussi's studied, some of the family's other sites. You cannot go into the Ephrussi half of the Palais. It is now a law office. But you can visit the non-Ephrussi half of the building. See the courtyard and stables. See the elegant staircases and mosaics. The Ephrussi part of the building faces the Ringstrasse. Don't be alarmed by the Starbucks and MacDonalds that are now located in the building.

Historic and mysterious building with deep history

If you read Hare with the Amber Eyes (big best seller) by deWaal, you will want to visit this site. His tale is intriguing and traces his family to pre-Nazi invasions when art was stolen, buildings destroyed and families dispersed. Read the book first, then find this building to get a sense of the loss.
