If you’re in the area, go see a performance at the annual Bregnez Festival. We saw Madame Butterfly and were blown away by the scenery, set, & ambience. We took a BSB Ferry from Lindau which docked directly at stage edge & returned us to Lindau at midnight.

We toured the facility when no operas were going on, but the stage was set for Madame Butterfly. Our tour guide was not super interesting or informative of the opera stage. Also note if you dont have an ankle strap on your shoe they won’t let you onto the water stage, they claim you could trip and fall. what a joke I had birkenstock sandles on and there was a railing, the next tour group that came through had sandals on and they were allowed on, I guess just chalk it up to a bad tour guide but she made the whole tour pretty uninteresting.

I came alone but was part of a larger group.

Everything was organized perfectly including an impressive evening dinner right before the show. Please see pictures for further details.

Saw Rigoletto, a year delayed thanks to COVID. Stunning spectacle, against a dramatic cloudy sunset backdrop, with fantastic on stage lighting, sound and scenic effects. Acoustics better than we expected, with clear unaided vocals. The outdoor theatre is indeed an impressive structure. Worth another trip !

Going to the opera in Bregenz was one of the most memorable experiences of my whole life. We saw Rigoletto, and the production was spectacular. I’ve never been to a more impressive opera production. Because it is outdoors, the singers and the orchestra are miked up, but this does not detract from the performance in any way, and the quality of the PA is excellent( they have just spent millions upgrading it). We were staying in Lindau, which is also on the lake, and we travelled to and from the opera by boat, which really added to the experience.

The show was spectacular. Somehow the Lake of Constance is included in the plot. If you have a chance to visit Bregrenz during the Festival I highly recommend it.

It’s the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that you’re listening to. What else can you look for...?
Of course, the stageshow is a SHOW. But it’s spectacular. Somehow the Lake of Constance is included in the plot: actors drown, get killed in the lake, fall into it.
Spectacular, too, is the natural scenery. Ducks don’t care about the stageshow. They will just continue their swims and quack-quack no matter how dramatic the opera may be...

Whether you are an opera fan or not this is a must-do!

We have gone 4 times now and each time has been so impressive.

The stage is just incredible and the setting couldn't be better.

The opera starts when the sun is still out and you can enjoy the background of the Lake of Constance and the Alps.
As the opera progresses the sun sets and with each stage of the sun setting brings upon a completely different feel to the setting and atmosphere.

The opera gets repeated so I would recommend going every other year.

If anyone has a chance to visit Bregrenz during this Festival I highly recommend it. What the engineers, artists, architects, and all staff are able to produce is beyond measure. We will never forget this experience or Rigoletto!!

Our plans enabled us to go through Bregenz and see for a second time the extraordinary opera they put on in the lake. The first time we saw Turandot, this time it was Rigoletto. There are really no words to describe how creative their productions are. The set in Rigoletto was as much a character as were the players themselves. In this case the oversized face, and hands echoed the tragedy of the story and served to create intimate as well as crowded scenes. Rigoletto’s daughter appears for the first time in the palm of an oversized hand, echoing the tenderness and protection with which Rigoletto views her.

The production lasts only 25 performances in the summer and the same program is run for two years and then it changes. As it is outdoors, it can be canceled due to weather. We were lucky as during our performance, we could see lightning in the distance, but it never came close. Ironically, one of the final scenes was full of a lightning and thunder, so it was art imitating nature.

Practical info...you can get tickets on line, and print at home. Many people arrived by ferry, and there a lots of places to eat nearby. The performance is about 2 hours with no intermission. It is worth every moment, even if opera is not your first love.
