Our daughter had given us tickets for the Seebühne in Bregenz for Christmas. And now it had finally come to this day.
It was hot above 30 degrees and it was thunderstorms and storms!
But we have not been misled (like 7000 others also because the idea
sold out)
We had 100 km arrival and we wanted some food beforehand in Bregens also had booked guided tour behind the scenes ( WHICH was very impressive )
We were thrilled by the performance and have the many roughnesses
( It was still raining in streams until shortly before the start ) gladly accepted.

The Vienna Philharmonic and world class singers perform on the magnificent lakeside stage in a summer festival season (July-August).

So far we have seen La Boheme, West Side story and Verdi's Masked Ball. in this amazing venue.
Other contributors have rightly praised the Sound reproduction, the stage sets and the whole performances as little short of perfection. Add in the glorious setting and you have reached the peak of perfection in the world of Opera and stagecraft. Meanwhile the ferries glide by behind the set in the darkness and the whole ambience is enough to bring that little tear to your eye. Don't let anyone else see it though; just not British!! Can't wait for the Magic Flute.....

This is a real WoW, don't miss it. It does not matter if u are an opera fan or just wanna enjoy a unique evening. This is absolutely Devine.
You can sleep in lindau in the other side of Bodensee and travel by the ship for 20 minutes. Before and after the show.

If you are an opera lover it is not to miss experience! The magnificent, huge decoration, perfect voices, perfect acoustic, perfect views! We travelled from Warsaw especially to see this and we were overwhelmed by its perfection!
We took flight to Zurich, as there is an easy connection with train from Zurich Flughafe to Bregenz, lasting ca 1.40 minutes, so it is very easy to get there. Trains are going frequently, even if you have to change it is quick and convenient. Bregenz itself is rather a dull city, we would not choose this place to stay, but the shore of lake Constanz is beautiful and picturesque , with a lot of attractions like a nice beach area.
The floating stage is a first thing you see while walking on the shore and it is beyond any expectation. This year it is a huge head of Marat, like a head of bathing giant, floating on the sea. It is advisable to plan a trip to have enough time to do a trip around the decoration (you can book it at the ticket office on coming or pre-book it on festivals webpage), so you can understand better the performance. There is no much difference in the seats, all seats have good view. We have chosen 1st class tickets, but they do have also priority tickets(?) with some benefits, like parking included, a welcome drink and binoculars provided (I did not use binoculars, as the decoration plays the main role and you can easily see everything). There are also loges - which are much more expensive, much more elegant and covered with a roof (which may be important during a bad weather) (James Bond was in shot in loges area). Dress code do not exist, so you are free to wear whatever you want (and Bregenz is NOT a chick place). It is important to bring a shawl or a warm clothes as evenings are cold with a breeze from the lake. We were lucky with a weather, but it is better to bring a raincoat. In the loges dress code is definitely black tie, but at the open air it is casual. I usually like to have comfort and glamour in places like that, but I enjoyed sitting in the open air with a sky above me, so if the weather is good there is no point in taking loge (they are far from the stage and the view is worse).
Performance itself.. is hard to describe, it is absolutely excellent, perfect, breathtaking! The giant decoration at the sunset, actors, acrobats, great voices - it was the best opera experience ever, and we do go a lot to opera, so we can compare.
Andre Chenier is not on the top list of opera hits, but the music was marvelous!
There is no English translation though, so it is better to read libretto in English before you go, otherwise it is hard to follow.
Seems that Bregenz is not yet prepared for English speaking tourists, as all the programs and festival publications are only in German.
It is better to come earlier to see the sunset. Alternatively, you can have a drink at the Sunset Bar with a view to the stage.
Also, remember that even if opera has 4 acts they do not make breaks. Performance lasts ca 2 hours.
As far as hotels are concerned - do not choose Helvetia, read my review if you want to know why. Closest to the festival is Mercury and next time we will stay there. Next year they perform "Magic flute" and I definitely want to come. Mercury is just next to the floating stage and it is elegant. It is no point in saving money on the accommodation, as this may spoil your evening (as it was in our case).

If the weather is with you (this is an outdoor theater with a floating stage that permits multiple special effects), you will tremendously enjoy watching and also, secondarily, hearing an opera where the first natural effect is the sunset.
Depending on the show, you will have live crane operators maneuvering the gigantic sets (last year for Aida), people literally walking on water (a mechanic bridge can come up and own), boats coming in and out or former Cirque du Soleil acrobats (this year 2011 and also for 2012, it is Andrea Chenier, set during the French Revolution), people thrown into the lake, special effects, holographic projections, outrageous costumes and great voices - although, due to the sound system, you do not always know exactly who is singing.
If they had sub-titles in english it would be even better, but as you are in open space you can always read your own libretto.

Really impressive and interesting building to host a sea theater. The place is big and has an event Centre and a nice seaside sitting. The shows seemed really fun although I didn’t visit during a show. I was told a lot of nice things about the performance. It’s really a nice place to visit. I loved the holidays relaxation atmosphere around the water.

The weather forecast was a little concerning for the 01 August performance of Turandot on the Seebuehne, but there were a lot of determined opera-goers with ponchos and slickers at the ready. During the second act, the threat of rain materialized, and the whole crowd quickly donned their rain gear while the show
continued, to be rewarded with a cleverly staged production that entertained from start to finish. We were told that if weather forced the program had to halt in the first 60 minutes, tickets would be refunded for those who could not fit into the smaller concert hall, where the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (one of Vienna's two revered orchestras) provides a sublime accompaniment to the performance. Fortunately, the rain was more of a light drizzle, leading up to a grand finale punctuated with lights, banners, and ironically, sprays of water. The backstage tours given during the daytime (in German language only) help one's appreciation of the high production values of the Festspiele, from the elaborate mechanics of the set to the unique opportunity to have the Princess Turandot enter the scene on a real barge. Safety divers with scuba tanks are discreetly prepared for any accidents, but despite the sloping wet stage, the large cast proved to be very sure-footed. Opera purists may dislike the miking of the performers, an unavoidable necessity for this setting, but the sound system is well balanced, and the synchronization with the conductor and orchestra in the concert hall is impressive. Large video screens well off the sides of the stage show the musicians at their remote work, and German subtitles are displayed on pole-mounted screens at either side of the set. Non-German speakers need only do a little self-study of the opera ahead of time, and simply enjoy Puccini's stirring melodies. The story is easy to follow, and the acting is broad enough to carry the plot. The 2015 performances appear to be mostly sold out, not surprising for a show with such spectacular entertainment value. However, there is a full-length YouTube video from Austrian TV that captures some of the fun, if not the total atmosphere, of a very unique theatrical experience.

Whilst the best way to experience this theatre would no doubt be during a performance of an opera during the Bregenz Festival, visiting this place during the day time is still impressive.

You get to see the scale of the outdoor sets, with information about their construction provided over a loud speaker, although only in German. You can walk around the arena seating and appreciate the theatre setting as it juts out into Bodensee, surrounded by the Austrian and Swiss mountains.

A unique theatre in a stunning setting and we'll worth a visit.

The Seebuehne is the must-see event in Bregenz when you are looking to escape the beautiful local lake and mountains.

You can visit the set during the day when through the tannoy they will explain (in German I'm afraid) how the set was constructed and why. For English and if you would like to know a little more than usual book a tour at the ticket office (€6) and definitely have the induction before the show.

The Seebuehne is the largest floating theatrical stage in the world and a spectacle to behold. The singers are world class and the shows full of furore played through the largest 5.1 soundsystem in the world.

The best seats are in the middle of the seating rink though it depends on the production if it is better to sit close or far away (I personally think a bit closer is better for the Magic Flute). In principle though there are no really bad seats in the house so even the cheapest tickets have a great view.

It is advisable to come a little early and watch the spectacular sundown (weather permitting of course). Remember to dress warm and possibly bring rain clothes, it does get chilly after the sun goes down.
