Entrance fee gives free access to a number of other venues, which is handy. We started with the extensive archaeological exhibits in the basement. The information was only in German. Details in English would have been helpful. Then we moved up to view the paintings on the first floor which were well worth seeing. Each room had an introduction on the wall in both German and English. The next floor houses the temporary exhibitions. Here we got confused as we could not work out which way to go round to ensure that we saw everything. Rooms that we initially thought were empty formed part of an “odour “ exhibition!
The door to the museum cafe was locked but it turned out that in fine weather the cafe moves out onto the street. We had a very pleasant lunch here

This was our first cultural stop in Innsbruck. The museum was founded in 1823 and has a very nice collection of modern art that was our main interest. We had a pleasant stroll here and I recommend to include it in your itinerary.

Buy a ticket here and get 4 more attractions in city during a month. The nearest one is Hofkirche, which upper part you can see from the museum, there is a special entrance. Here you can spend at least an hour. Furniture, festival attributes and ect. will be more interesting with audioguide.

This museum houses many kinds of art work. For me the most interesting part are the paintings. One of my favourite painters is Pieter Bruegel the Elder and there I could see one of his paintings. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit the Rembrandt was missing. But there were Kokoschka, Klimt and some others, unexpectedly even van Dyck. So we spent a really nice hour in this museum.

The Museum building is a solid and beautiful one with a unique and stunning façade in Florentine renaissance style having a superb sculptural group on the balustrade enclosing the flat roof on the top. A smaller balustrade is also over the porch preceeding the entrance door around a terrace supported by six almost cylindrical columns with doric capitals. It's a very nice and very attractive façade in front of which one feels full of emotion.
The Museum itself is very interesting. It comprises several collections on divers themes. There it's possible to observe items appertaining to archaeology, art and art history as well as other subjects. Several music instruments are also on display at the Museum, some of them made by the famous Tyrolean violin maker Jakob Stainer. The visit to that Museum is an excellent way to learn about cultural history of Tyrol from prehistory to the present time. Most of items there exhibited are art works belonging to all styles having determined the art tendencies. The art collection can be deemed a very important one. It includes paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and miniatures dating back to the Middle Ages until the modern period. The relevant paintings are mostly by Austrian, Dutch and German artists. The fantastic collection of Dutch paintings, for instance, includes works by Rembrant and Breughel. Among those by German painters maybe those by Lucas Cranach ought to be outlined.
On the day I visited the Museum, August 13th,2019 there was a temporaty exhibition of paintings by Otto Dix and Albin Egger-Lienz. The paintings concerned call up the horrors of the First World War as per the painters' own experiences. Each one of those painters found his own path to striking formulation of the subjects of war, which could be clearly observed in that exhibition.
By all means, the Museum should be visited while in the marvellous city of Innsbruck. It's an essential way to have an insight on many aspects regarding the Tyrol past and likewise to contemplate many superb art works concerning some other domains.

Whilst it may not be the easiest museum to navigate what it lacks in ease of navigation it makes up in terms of its temporary and permanent exhibitions. For us the highlight was the temporary exhibition of ‘EGGER-LIENZ UND OTTO DIX BILDERWELTEN ZWISCHEN DEN KRIEGE’ and the museum’s collection of Austrian string instruments. The staff were very helpful in terms of directions.

Well worth visiting. Good displays with plenty go interest for adults and children. From 2nd floor you can access a span across the Court church. Great view of tomb and bronze figures.

The museum is integrated into the Hofkirche, so that as you wander around suddenly a door opens and when you enter you look down on Maximilians tomb. My highlight of the museum was the Stube, several reconstructed living rooms from the 17th century. There was also a delightful exhibit of Nativity scenes, but even without that seasonal exhibit this is a wonderful museum to spend some time.

Museum is located in the city center and hosts a pretty big collection of items. Most items were in pretty good shape and the exhibits diversity was good. You will find music instruments to coins and more. A lovely place to learn the regional history and spend some quality time.

A varied collection of old and contemporary paintings, sculptures, artifacts and musical instruments.
Wheelchair entrance is hard to find but the staff was very helpful in assisting us to maneuver from floor to floor.
Make sure you get a tablet guide to fully appreciate what you are seeing since the signage is only in German.
